I don't think it's spice. It looks like crispy old mistreated outdoor honestly. Even the stems look nasty. Very well could have been crumbled from a brick. And I think I might see a seed or seed pod down in the lower middle. Also, it looks to be about 3 grams tops. Maybe less with how dry it "looks". Fire up a one hitter and that should tell the story.
I hope it's legit and your friend didn't pull one over on you, but it doesn't look good.

Looks like it was quick dried (and toasted) in an oven or something. No curing (with some moisture left) would explain why it doesnt have that cannabis smell.

That my friend is what you call mexican dirt brick weeds,,, very very shitty stuff but blow a blunt or two itll work,,, not as good as dank, or mid, or even reggie at that,, but dirt is still green, just way mistreated

Thats not spice by any means. I used to sell and make that shit. Spice looks like oregano leaves that have turned brown. That is some horrible dirt weed. Some advice, kick your friends ass for even picking that shit up.

agreed! no more smoking with that friend till he gets a RIU account or learns what ok weed is. 35 for 5 grams of that is not a deal, then again i dont know where you live soo. its mos deff. not spice or real thai stick.. mr nice guy smells like beef jerky/pepper spice, maybe its a weird strain like that? then anything that brown is gonna smell weird lol. id demand to talk to someone at that center too, thats BS bigtime.

I live in California if that helps anyone. I agree with everyone that it doesn't really look like spice, but the smell is really weird and someone told me that "spice" is just a spray that can be sprayed on any plant matter

Gotta sack waiting on my first harvest cause my good bud guy was curing....I still have the sack...paid $30 for a quarter smoke a bowl n a joint n just couldn't get hi.... I haven't smoked anything but kush for so long I don't think I can get hi off regs anymore....

LOL Once in like 1994 a neighbor in the huge complex I lived in came over with what he said was Thai stick, it was weed that looked similar to yours but more light green, it was wrapped around a miniature toilet paper roll and broke off in bity piece, I had not seen anything like it before. It had a spice smell and I tested it and it did absolutely nothing to me. Didn't even taste like weed. Either way it's shit.
