Number of light hours question?

Hi i have been reading alot of advice on this site for about 3weeks now and have just put together my first grow at the moment the plants are about 8cm i just put them into a cupboard lined with tin foil and put in a single 85watt cfl (day light) its 3 plants in on a shelf about a half meter by half meter high by half meter deep just want to know what would happen if i only had the light on for 14 hours a day? Im paranoid about having the light on while im not home.

It has to be at least 18 hrs out of 24 on. The cfl poses little danger. There's not much choice, anything around 12/12 will through it into flower early.

Try to seal that shit up so you don't have light leaks and put a timer on your light. I would get rid of the tin foil and use flat white pannelling, paint or mylar. I'm not sure about the light but I would imagine that they're going to want to flower on 14 hours a day.

Thanks for the quick replies i bought a times i was going to use it for the water system only but if i really have the light on 18hrs a day then i'l put the light on the timer. When i get paid next month i'll get the paint. Whats the problem with light leak? I can see the light coming out of where the hinge in the cupboard door is just a little tho?

then people wont wonder why you have the sun trapped in your closet. It will help with your paranoia to have it completely sealed off.

I would not be able to sleep with a light leak.

I thought his concern about not being home was heat or fire more than light leak.

Yeah im worried about heat and fire. I live by myself so its cool if it doesnt effect my plants then i wont worry to much about it.
