I have pretty much always just dug up a small tree like under 2' and transplanted. I always transplant late winter as it gives the roots a little head start before the hot/dry summers get here. You will need to give them water the 1st. year or so in the summer or when very dry. I have grown some from seeds, but there are so many sprouts down here there really isn't a point unless you are going for a variety you can't get any. I don;t know where you live, but Red Oak (Shumard) and White Oak are some of the faster growing ones. I have always just used reg. dirt to grow from seed, they need water and light.

have done. this isnt my first time but when i have planted them ive had no luck. any tips on soil and such?
your best bet is to go into the woods where you live and dig up a sapling that has already sprouted. just don't wait to long. oaks develop a long tap root. if you break it when digging it up it might not survive. acorns may need cold stratification before they germinate. i don't remember. maening they need a couple months of low temps before they will sprout. but if you want to continue to try sprouting oaks i encourage it. it may or may not work. nature is strange that way.

I have an oak tree over my house...every 5 years or so, it has a year where it drops like 3 times the regular amount of acorns...this last time was last year, and I ended up with 50+ sprouting that we put into SOLO cups and were gonna take to the farmers market, but then we decided that no one would want to buy them. But the last drop about 5 or 6 years ago before this one, we let one of the trees grow and now it's pushing 12 feet tall.

dude i hope you gave the trees away. doesnt matter if no one buys them we need the air. DSC_0432.jpg the best time of my life. im limited on the amount of acorns because all the squirrels keep stealing them.
