Oatmeal for nitrogen?

I'm new to the organics game, at least for indoor growing. Trying to salvage a grow that was started in cheap fertilized grow soil(MGMC).

I've read the forum(excellent info) and just brewed a batch of manure tea. Too early for results yet.

Anyhow, I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried oatmeal in a soil mix. It has a good amount of protein, so should be a good nitrogen source. It's cheap too, a big plus. I searched the forums and see no sign anyone has tried it.

So what does the group think?

If you use it, grind it up into a fine sand or powder consistancy and water it into your soil or top dress your plants with some of the oatmeal mixed into a nice soil mix and then water thoroughly. Make sure you have active beneficial microbes and micorrhizae (the root fungi) in your soil to break down the oatmeal before it starts to mold.

And let us know how it works. I don't see why it wouldn't work out for you, I've seen coffee grinds used as a top mulch and worked into soil for the same reasons.

Hmm, no negative replies. This is looking like unexplored territory. I will probably wait to try until my next grow attempt. Unless someone has had a negative experience?

Some good points dirt clean, just looking for easier, cheaper nitrogen. I'm currently trying manure tea, not sure how good that will be for me. Mostly if I have a choice between manure/fish emulsion and oatmeal, I'd probably go with oatmeal.

Definitely there things that could go bad. I want to get a good grow under my belt, then maybe adding a little oatmeal to start, add more if things go well. I know alfalfa is good, but oatmeal might be more nitrogen dense.

Kingb420,

I see a good number of RIUers have had luck with mgmc. Can't diss it, just that it was a bad time for me. Did you use it straight or supp with magnesium? Those might be the things I did wrong.

Oatmeal like alfafla meal does cook and can injure your root zone, when my plants need is I make a top dressing of casting a mix of 50% alfalfa and 50% oatmeal recover with more casting, add a heap of micro and my babies love it. Do not add to your soil even if its dust. But it is filled with beneficial protein I just don't know the npk I also use it in teas.. hope I helped

bkgmitts19,

You may be a pioneer with this stuff! What have you seen for results? Notice anything special?

1 of my mentors, charlie, is the pioneer, and my g-ma used to make teas back in the day with it. I use it in veg mainly, the main thing I noticed it how well plant adjust to stress when on an oatmeal/alfalfa meal regiment, I couldn't stunt my last 2 girls at all, mostly indica, and topping and LST didn't slow them at all. I dont use it in flowerin cause I tried once it stunted 1 plant (the heavier feeder) stopped bud developement for a week, the other plant (the more stress resistant) took it and added an extra layer of resin... I'm still experimenting

I hope you plants takes it in stride pockets, but if you notice any burning or weird growth flush flush flush, this weird jelly starts to form on the roots when there is a bad reaction or breakdown process... So I just don't place it directly in the soil anymore, hopefully you'll have my g-mas luck and evrything works for you..
