CHICAGO – President-elect Barack Obama plans to meet with vanquished Republican rival John McCain on Monday in Chicago, his transition office announced Friday.

The meeting will be the first since Obama, the Democratic Illinois senator, beat McCain, an Arizona senator, by an Electoral College landslide in the Nov. 4 election.

"It's well known that they share an important belief that Americans want and deserve a more effective and efficient government, and will discuss ways to work together to make that a reality," Obama spokesman Stephanie Cutter said in announcing the meeting.

Cutter also said the two will be joined at Obama's Chicago transition office by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a McCain confidant, and Rep. Rahm Emanuel, the Illinois Democrat whom Obama has chosen to be his White House chief of staff.

In his first two weeks as president-elect, Obama has struck a bipartisan tone. He paired a Republican and a Democrat to meet with foreign leaders this weekend on his behalf in Washington, for example, and his aides emphasized the bringing together of both sides in announcing the meeting with McCain

PARIS (Reuters) - Russia could cancel its deployment of missiles near the Polish border if U.S. President-elect Barack Obama scraps plans for a missile defense system in central Europe, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said.
In an interview with French daily newspaper Le Figaro published on Thursday, Medvedev said Moscow had no choice but to react to U.S. plans to set up a network of missiles and radar systems near its own frontiers.
"But we are ready to abandon this decision to deploy the missiles in Kaliningrad if the new American administration, after analyzing the real usefulness of a system to respond to 'rogue states', decides to abandon its anti-missile system," he said.

"We are ready to negotiate a 'zero option'. We are ready to reflect on a system of global security with the United States, the countries of the European Union and the Russian Federation."

Washington says the missile defense system it plans to set up in Poland and the Czech Republic is needed to protect the United States against missile strikes from what it calls rogue states, notably Iran.
Russia believes the system poses a threat to its security and last week announced plans to deploy Iskander tactical missiles in the Kaliningrad region bordering Poland in response.

Medvedev said he had spoken with Obama by telephone and hoped to meet him in person soon.

"We hope to create frank and honest relations with the new administration and resolve problems that we were not able to resolve with the current administration," he said.

Asked about his response to the global financial crisis, which has hit the Russian banking sector hard, Medvedev said there had been a flight of capital out of Russia and moves to protect key banks and private savings were necessary.

He said the government might take stakes in certain banks, as had been done in the United States and Britain but he said "nationalization is not the solution" and added that any government stakes would be sold as soon as possible.

Obama is smart. He's looking toward the election in 2012. He knows that if he wants to be reelected he's going to have to move toward the middle ground. The question at this point is, if he governs from the middle, what happens to all the support he received from the uber-leftist orgs like MoveOn? Aren't they expecting a payback?

Or maybe he could just be practicing what he preaches. This is stuff he's been saying he'd do all along after all.

A lot of liberal organizations are definitely expecting him to be more liberal, and I don't doubt there will be disappointment among their ranks. There already is, in fact, over his vote on FISA among other things.

For what it's worth, I'm glad to see you guys starting to warm up to the idea of an Obama presidency. It gives me hope that things can change. ;)

ya but you gotta admit we would be the most open as far as conservatives, i mean people on this site are some of the most progressive

like we all smoke pot

you know also, all my life I have felt like a criminal and like I was always afraid or looking out for the law

now im slowly starting to realize that, wait a min, the only thing I do thats against the law is smoke a plant!! thats it!! im not doing bad shit and stuff!!

here I am all my life feeling like im bad, like a criminal, like cops shoud be looking out for me and stuff and really all this time i am a just great citizen of america

would help if I saw somone in trouble, i pay my taxes, discourage stupid activities and others hurting others

but yet all my life I have felt like somone "on the run" "one eye over my shoulder" kind of life

after all these years I now realize how fucked up that is, how wrong it is how ive been treated

this is over. Im done with being afraid or ashamed, or made to feel like i am a substandard parent because i smoke this plant.

but yet im still tied down, i cant speak out, i cant stick my head out, specially if you grow, specially with young children. I cant risk a thing

I hope other problems do not overshadow then need for Obama to implemnt respect for states rights from the federal government

only then will it help us in the draconian states which lynch baggers and smokers

in my state you are required to pay taxes on your marijuana and put a stamp on every marijuana package showing the tax was paid.

however if I try to go pay my taxes on my weed to comply, they will jail me

i want to pay my taxes on this weed. where can I go?

would it be crazy for us to start a marijuana tax fund, for citizens who want to pay thier fair share of taxes on thier marijuana even if the government wont accept it

what if many did this and the fund became huge

then the money can be given to state and federal governments stating this is marijuana tax money that has been colleted for the people

since the government is too idiotic to collect it

wouldnt that make them look like idiots and hypocrates cuz then we can highlight thier redicules impossible to comply with marijuana tax laws:mrgreen:

I wonder if that would make headlines

Its such a crazy idea that it would make head lines, i just dont know who would wanna pay:mrgreen:

The Cannabis Tax Fund or C.T.F.

For Americans Who want to Pay Thier Fair Share Of Taxes

that would throw them for a loop eh?

Geeze, that's 98 bucks an OZ. even if one could do it. Does the state (S) realize how fast they could get solvent if they instituted that tax or even a lessor one. I'd say 10 bucks an OZ. would be a fair tax on small amounts, 50 bucks on LB.s and 100.00 bucks a year for a grow liscence with no tax on what you grow for personal, but the 10 buck and 50 buck tax on what you sell. What say you all? Plus, they must legalize hemp as a commercial crop. We could pay off the deficit in about 10 years.

This brings up another point regarding taxes and cannabis. In all the time that I've been posting on the various cannabis boards, I've yet to meet one legal medical user who has written off his/her grow equipment, nutrients, seeds, clones, etc., against his/her income tax as a medical expense.

Who wants to go first?

Well, as a medical user and caregiver, I take all of those deductions. But it doesn't make any sense to take them as a medical expense, they are a business expense because I write off business income with them, the money I make by providing to patients. We have to pay all of our taxes on the bottom of the P&L, so they are a smarter business expense.

Great, and good for you! :)

Now that makes sense if you are growing for others as a care giver, but what about those of us who grow only for our own medical use? I don't sell what I grow and only use it to ease my neuropathic pain. Should I be writing my expenses off as medical expenses against my federal income tax, even though the feds don't recognize any medical benefits from cannabis and it remains a schedule I drug with the DEA?

That's a good thought, taking a medical expense. It's tricky though, the medical expenses must be taken on the Itemized Deductions form, and they are only allowed if they total more than a certain percentage of your gross income.

As far as the feds know, my farm produces dried flowers. They probably think I make potpourri. :eyesmoke:

Did anyone look at those tax stamps and tax amounts? Nevada was a tax of $100/ gram. How are they going to charge a hundred bucks tax on 20 dollars worth of product? They can't tax it at a rate this is more than 500% of what it is worth. WTF?

No I'm not growing schwag and what kind of weed is taxable at a rate of $100 for a GRAM? If the tax on a gram is $100, the weed would have to be sold for much more than $100/gram

Do you know how much a GRAM is?

No I'm not growing schwag and what kind of weed is taxable at a rate of $100 for a GRAM? If the tax on a gram is $100, the weed would have to be sold for much more than $100/gram

Do you know how much a GRAM is?
Do I know how much a gram is? You're killin' me!

Yes ... a gram is either $20.00 or one 28th of an ounce, depending upon how you meant the question. Of course, that $20.00 would be for "normal" pot ... and then there is my Potwowie! :leaf:

Obama is smart. He's looking toward the election in 2012. He knows that if he wants to be reelected he's going to have to move toward the middle ground. The question at this point is, if he governs from the middle, what happens to all the support he received from the uber-leftist orgs like MoveOn? Aren't they expecting a payback?

if obama is going to be re elected he better do something fast about a economy losing 600K jobs a month.his job plan will cost 300 K dollars for job created or kept.his first two years is looking like he is on track to lose around 12 to 20 million jobs .just in the first two years of his admin.i personaly dont think the government can fix it and they are going to go broke and default on their loans.if he doesnt do something .in the first six months the democrats and obama will be blamed for the economy

rightfully so

Which means NV wants to collect a tax of $2800 per ounce. That's just the tax. How much would you have to sell weed for to afford that tax on it?
