Ocean Forest - Soil Test Report

Hey All,

I recently sent a sample of Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil into Logan Labs for testing.

I scooped out 6 - 1 cup samples and let air dry on an un-coated paper plate. I then ran each cup through a kitchen sifter to remove the bark, perlite, sticks, etc.. I bagged up about 2 cups of this concentrated mix and sent to Logan for analysis.

Thought I'd post the results here in case anyone was curious or to help folks on their path to a successful growing experience.

Hope this helps!

Im curious to see what else is in there... I have never had trouble with bugs but with this covid bullshit i had to get a few bags of ffof. Leaf miners and gnats seem to be an unwelcome addition to my garden.
Little pissed about it to be honest.

where did you buy it and where and how long did they store it? may not be a ff problem.

I swore i would never buy a bag of overpriced ff. Had trouble even finding a pepper plant for my outdoor garden... Hopefully everyone gets back to work and stops buying out my normal goods

Yeah the shop i used to go to had all sorts of plants and the humidity was always insanely high in there. Im betting the gnats i got were just from their stupid fucking plants.
I use FF all the time wouldn't change, but I do get gnats from it at times. H2o2 flush and stick traps do it for me though,

I am wondering why there is no nitrogen in the report. Does a soil test not bother with nitrogen?
The reason that they do that is because it's usually for farmers and by the time that they put out N in their fields and have it tested, the N will be gone. So, farmer's stopped testing for N. However, you can request that they test for N. Also, when you get a test done from Logan Labs, you need to tell them that you are working with a light weight medium so they can use their "Weighted Scoop". They have a scoop that is supposed to weigh 2g, but potting soil will weigh less so you have to tell them. Otherwise, the test results will be skewed. I prefer Spectrum Analytic over Logan Labs because they use bar graphs that are MUCH easier to read. Really though, I gave up on Mehlich 3 tests and go with Soil Savvy test kits now. Easier to use, simple to read, and it shows lock-out unlike the Mehlich 3 test.

Those are rather interesting results. Curious as to why there was no nitrogen results in the test....

My last 2 bags of FFOF seemed off like the soil was dead/dry, and came w those lovely gnats. Both bags were bought at different places too.. The first one was from the overpriced boojie garden center bc I needed it that day. The other bag was from my normal shop and they do crazy turnover. Product doesn't sit in their shop for more than a couple days and its usually sold out. I had to use some Recharge to get the plants going. I have been starting to wonder if this is a side effect of them changing distribution to the Hydrofarm/Sunlight/Hawthorne beast. My guess is the bags are sitting longer in warehouses / qc has slipped a bit . Just guessing but not the same as it used to be. I have 2 bags left and if they both give me same problems I may be done with FF for good.

Glad to know im not the only one. My bags were extremely dry and had a large amount of twigs and bark. Very coarse soil.
The bugs are more irritating that any of that. As a first time ff buyer I wont be buying any more.
