09/16 - Plating Day
Starting a journal for my second grow.
All are welcome to follow / comment.

4 OG Kush photos (fem seeds from Humboldt Seed Co. - starting the beans today)
1 qt pots for seedling, 5g final homes
4x4 Tent
FFOF (+appx 25% perlite added)
Dr Earth Flower Girl after the flip
4 Chinese burples (3 random, 1 Viparspectra VA 1200)

Notes:
Planning to run a SCROG on this one - I lost control of my canopy last time (the whole biomass actually!), so I'm thinking that a SCROG and better pruning / defol will help.
Planning to veg longer - last grow vegged barely 4 weeks; I was afraid of the stretch. Vegging till canopy is almost full this round - letting them tell me when this time*.

*Last run (First grow) I wanted to have a quick harvest for 2 reasons:
1. Proof of concept - The micro-grow worked, the 4x4 worked - but bagseed hermed.
2. Giving my Wife 2 rips of our own top-shelf weed makes "you're planning to spend HOW MUCH on a new light?" conversations a whole lot easier. :weed: bongsmilie
Wonder if I could give reality 2 rips in exchange for some cooperation...

4 seeds going on plates / paper towels. Hopefully they pop in a day or two. :bigjoint:

09/18 - Planting Day

No pics - just a date for reference when I lose track a month from now...

Seeds cracked yesterday and had 1/4 - 1/2" tap roots.

Seeds are 1/2" under the soil in 1pt pots. They'll stay there until they're ready for their 5g fabric homes.
Soil - FFOF w/ 25% perlite.
Moistened soil with RO water while scooping into pots.

1 Light on for now, the Vipar VA-1200 - the veg / bloom knobs make adjustment easy. Currently 50% veg (blue / white), 30% bloom (red / white).
18/6 schedule.
Hung appx 40" atm. Will lower to around 36" after they show their heads.

09/24 Small update:

4th seedling had done a u-turn at the surface. I stood it up and figured I'll give it a few days, looks like it will make it!

When I was concerned about the 4th seedling, I plated 3 more OG Kush beans. 2 popped and are in soil as of 09/23.
Hopefully they show their heads soon.
If the last bean pops I may start it and cull the weakest before dropping the net. Maybe my neighbor will want it.

Currently, the plan is to train them through veg; flip (probably 1st or 2nd week of nov), when stretch slows hang the trellis.

Comedic note - I decided to rig my own trellis. I slapped the frame together and began weaving and increasing tension on the frame when WHAM! the corners failed and it snapped closed on me like a bear trap --- I'll be bracing those corners up before the next build. :eyesmoke:

Wonder if I can change the title of this thread - I'm running 6 in the tent now.

1 pint brown pots - OG Kush
3 of the OG are taking off nicely, 3 of them are still a little small. I overwatered them a bit and they're going a bit slower than their sisters (again! :wall:) .
Going to avoid watering today - probably tomorrow too. I'm pretty confident in most other areas of my grow now, but I'm still a bit of a baby-killer, so I stress a bit until they really get going.

1 gal smart pots - unkown genetics
From the same batch I ran last grow. They're going into their own enclosure soon - they hermmed on me last grow, so they'll be quarantined way before sex is apparent.
Interestingly, starting them in the bigger pots seems to mitigate my tendency to drown babies.
This batch of seeds is going to become my experimental pool.
This round I'm planning to flip them to flower at 1.5 weeks from seed. A bit of this is for timing - I want to turn the enclosure as a veg area, and use the 4x4 for flowering before the OG finish.

Excuse the mess - It will get cleaned before transplanting the OG to their 5g homes.

10/17 - OG is stretchy & I finally know my bagseed strain

Thanks for subbing in! :bigjoint:

OG - 6 small brown pots in the center.
They STRETCHED at first, so I lowered the light a few inches. New node looks normal so far - hope that fixed it.
Watered to runoff.

Yellowing lower leaves - I wanted to water this morning, but missed lights off. :wall:
At lights on, they were wilty (expected) and lower leaves on a few plants are yellowing --- would 8 hours dry do that?
Overall they are smaller and less vigorous than their bagseed* cousins.
Maybe I should be starting everything in 1g pots - seems to work for these 4!

Strawberry Kush - bagseed strain found
My "bagseeds" aren't quite bagseeds. They came from a gromie of mine that mixed up strains while sorting seeds & gave me a gram container full.
He looked at the 4 in the 1g and says they're Strawberry Kush. Other choices would be Blueberry or GSC.
Starting in 1gal seems to be the best thing I've found to avoid drowning baby plants - they're thrving.
--Thinking of making a drop bottom and shoelaced sides on 1 gal pots for easy transplanting for the next round.

edit - switched all to tap water.

Weird growth20201017_152706.jpg, the first two leaf sets are raggedy, but by node 4 they're emerald green and perfect.
These are moving to a micro-enclosure and going 12/12 in a few days.

Random brown pot in the foreground
Guess I had an extra seed in my soil. Giving it to a neighbor.

The OGs definitely do look dry from the pics and can definitely cause a bit of yellowing on the lowers. Doesn't look like a big deal though, they will be fine. Might be time to start thinking about topping/pinching or LST once you get em perked up.

Was hoping to top today. No worries, whenever they say they're ready.

Looking good so far, keep it up. :-)

Love your choice of the OG from HSO, its a fantastic plant. Have grown OG for 6-7 years on/off and in that time only found a few "fenos"/ diff growing pattern types. So its an incredible stabile strain. ( imho )

I am very sure that OG contains anthocyanins, as i do love to let the go red during last weeks of flowering, by lowering the air temp, both during lights on/off.

:D:D:D

I can recommend HERB.IQ for the grower with much on his mind. lol

Recently stumbled upon it, in some post in here and quite fast found it to be quite journal helpfull. ( with possible encryption )
Open source and everything.

10/20 - Is OG Kush Cal/Mag Hungry?

Pics to come at lights on. I'll start a thread in the problems area as well.
I've been reading threads & googling like crazy. I think I have it: magnesium deficiency
(oddly, I'm happy that I wasn't over-watering!)

Yellow lower leaves, nice looking new growth
Purple stems
Stunted growth

Switching from RO to tap water seems to have perked up a couple of them a bit, hopefully the others will follow suit despite:
When they started perking up I went & topped them - not a good idea :wall: Should have waited a couple days more.

I added 1 Tbsp of Epsom salt to a gallon of tap and have it steeping / off-gassing for 24 hours. Planning to apply at next watering.

I do know that it's part of the strain DNA - The S-berry Kush is exploding with the exact same regimen.

edit - I know I've seen this before, but I'm putting the link for reference:

If your using ro water u need to add extra magnesium because the water don’t have any of it , I learned myself I have to add 5ml of cal mag to my feeding each time

I just switched to tap 2 waterings ago.

So the Epsom I added for next watering is good?
Still funny that the bagseed is thriving. I'm wondering if I should start seedlings in the 1g pots from now on - the SK didn't jump up like that before.

Was reading that OG can be finicky to grow. Well, I guess I wanted to learn more about growing - I seem to learn the most when addressing problems. :eyesmoke:

Lights on - mixed results.

Rearranged plants
- the SK
Are looking great, so I started LST and moved them into the middle of the light - the VA-1200 has a pretty pronounced hot spot.
All 4 appear to be girls, but after last time I'll be watching them throughout...
They look like they're having a huddle in the middle!

- OG were moved to the outside of the circle, a little cooler and direct circulation over them.
3 of the OGs still have damp soil - why can't I stay off the bottle?! The single pic looks the worst.
The 3 damp ones have intake and circulation fans directly on them.
The other 3 are looking much better

* I forgot to ask my neighbor about the little plant, so it's still here. :eyesmoke:

Anyway, here's the pics.

10/23 - Major changes in count, Final homes for 6 - I think I like LST.

With the OG struggling and the SK thriving, I'm revamping plans again. Instead of the 4 6 that I was running,
I'll be flowering the healthiest 9 plants of the bunch in the tent - I'm sure I'll regret this decision in a month or so.
I do have a second enclosure in case it gets so crowded I lose it - but I'd really like to see if I can manage it.

OG - Looks better overall. Pretty sure I know why I overwater so badly - my little brown plastic pots suck compared to 1g fabric.
Began transplanting to 5g homes - the OGs are just about rootbound...
Remembered that original plans were for 4 plants - getting more soil today. :eyesmoke:
Quadlining / Manifold. I used this on my last grow and it worked really well - OG doesn't seem to like it that much...
Stalks & branches are thin & shorter than the SK - I definitely stunted these.

SK - Growing STRONG. Thick stalks & vigorous growth - I'm starting in 1g fabric & ditching the little brown plastic pots.
These are my experimental seeds, I decided to try LST on them for this grow. I think I REALLY like it - as organized as main / quadlining but without the recovery time. When I figure out my final tent count I'll also be figuring out when to top these to redirect all growth sideways.

Here's the pics, sorry 'bout the lights on in a couple of them.
