What sort of emitter is in the can lights?
Halogen bad
LED maybe good

"Hmm... What a nice letter. I especially liked the nice things at the end."

I'm guessing that it will depend upon 1, what the actual amount of lumens (and PPFD) the lights produce at full power, and 2, the plants you choose to grow.

In my recent expierence the number of photons is the important issue. More is better even if the spectrum is not as specific for plants. Within reason, you can fry plants.

As long as the light puts out the required spectrum and intensity it doesn't matter what they are. For example people had the same "you need a grow light, you can't use those" answer when I hooked up 4x14w 4000k household globes and 2x11w 3000k globes to an e27 splitter.

Puts out over 600umol/s at 18" and fills a 2x2 fine. $30 worth of led globes with diffuser removed and a $7 splitter.
