Peeps: My power company [NY State] now accepts a E-Mail smart phone reading of my meter… found out by e-mail… So, I take picture of electric, and gas meters and don’t have to worry about a meter poser wandering around…. Just giving everyone a heads up, maybe you can benefit also…one less person wandering around, you might want to check into it… Sand

I have a smart meter, it sends the info itself. Surprised you don't yet, I thought all were being switched over eventually.

well FP&L replaced our meters with new electronic meters, so instead of shutting us off at the house (on the very day the invoice is due) they can now do it from the convenience of their cooling towers..here's to you FP&L:finger:

Sweet... now we can cut the meter reader down to 27 hours a week and we don't have to pay for his medical insurance. WIN WIN WIN!!

I opted out of the smart meter program. There were to many questions about the wireless data they send. Things like is it encrypted etc... I heartily enjoyed war driving in my younger days.

I shoved a snowbank against my old meter 2 years ago and they replaced it with the smart meter. My electric bill has actually gone down since. I really like that they're not coming onto my property to check it.

They have the customer do all the reading work!? I wonder what penalties are in place for missing a reading.

Isn't your meter out in the open? Anyone that can get into my back yard could read my usage. What sensitive data could be getting sent?

i thought the whole point of a smart meter was that it sent the info so men didnt have to read it....so then what the hell is a smart meter?

How about piggy backing your use on someone else's data stream so they pay your bill etc...... there are many other deeper darker nastier things that could be done but I have not looked at the data stream and have no time to.

NYSEG.... The house I live in is 107 years old... It has the original Meter socket or the one house was upgraded to [looks like circa 1940] … Single Phase 110/ 60 amp service… NO 220 vac…and the Meter is in the basement… I see meters on every house around here, so having a meter reader knock on my door and then take him downstairs… Naw… F that…

Smart phone reader here… Forever? I hope…

I would still think there would be a unique identifier specific to your meter so that no matter how it got transmitted you would be responsible for your own bill. And it seems like the meter will provide the actual usage data to back you up if anything ever happens. And if the meter doesn't monitor and record usage correctly that should also be easy to demonstrate. Gnome sayin'?

Smart meters transmit through the Line side feeder wires... Not through your computer network... Look at your smart meter... Any phone lines sticking out of it? haaaa... The only way to steal power from a smart meter would be to steal it at the billing office.... or cut the lock off, and turn it over for one week a month.... I really doubt they monitor every smart meter 24/7 365... More like once a month for 10 seconds....

Smart metters are bad news - Their are several different manfactures of them , different meters have different cabailityes some of these capabilitys are down right scary and intrusive .

All the smart metters are designed to send a RF signal every 15seconds to 2 minutes reporting your power usage , Most places have readers on poles so the power company has close to real time information
they also have the ability to comnunicate with newer applianaces on your metered power (seriousley) . This is done so in the future they will offer a small rebate if you sign up for a program that shuts down your major power appliances during peak power usage hours .
this program will be voluntary at first , Only to become mandotory

Their are possible health issues from the near constant RF signals , many studys indicate this will be a problem , Like cell phone signals

Their are also TONS of conspiracy theroys about them - Personaly I believe most of them

If you value what little privacy you have left fear the 'smart meter'

LOL gnome ;)

Yes I agree there are things they will need to fix. Interestingly some of the Ph.D. Stanford kids showed the meters were mis-reading, some by design and others by incorrect provisioning. Turns out over 43,000 meters installed by PG&E have had to be exchanged for faults of one form or another.

I'm not saying I'm against smart meters. We will go that way one day when the ass hats get their game dialed in. I'm saying that I'm not going first gen. tech on this, considering I'm growing and I don't want to arm wrestle the monolithic electric company down here.

There are other things that datastream can do that I don't really want to publish here. I'm waiting for all that crap to be reined in prior to adding one otherwise I will have to filter out my electronics from talking on this end and by the time what is really happening gets published someone else will have those devices readily for sale and that is what I'm waiting for.
