my question is why do people choose the flood n drain system does it yield higher than soil or dwc. what are the advantages to flood n drain. thaks guys
hydro systems make nutes instantly available to your plants.. the only limitation to how much nutes your plant can use is your plant itself... it has as much as it needs and an almost constant supply of them.. this means higher yields and quicker growth... this is holds true for about any hydro system be it ebb and flood, flood tables, DWC, areoponics.. anything where the nutes are recirculated over the root system.. where as with soil the nutes have to be broken down by the microorganisms in the soil to become available.. which usually means they last longer in the soil than in hydro.. but if you over do it its harder to remove the nutes from soil than hydro..
soil, imo, tastes better than hydro.. something about the organicness of it... its just a much deeper flavor i guess.. hydro can sometimes have a "chemical" taste to them.. not like an unflushed plant chemical taste.. but you can usually tell hydro vs organic..
and soil can yield as much or more than hydro systems given the right set of circumstances.. where someone is constantly monitoring the soil and everything..
with soil you have to worry about root rot and over watering.. you still have to worry about that with hydro, but its easier to fix because you just flood less if you need to or change out the res if need be...
hydro you do have to worry about mold growing in your res and worry about res temp.. it is a little more daily checking with hydro too.. for PH and PPM and all that..
sorry im just randomly rambling things as they come to mind...
soil is harder to get rid of and is messier... you can empty your hydro system res into a bathtub, toilet, ect where as soil you have to dump somewhere.. plus filling the buckets with soil and mixing the perlite or vermiculite or whatever, like i said, is messy... and some mediums for hydro are reusable, like hydroton...
you dont have to worry about soil pests with hydro...
you dont have to worry about water leaks with soil...
really there are pros and cons to both.. both have their good points and bad points.. its really up to the grower and situations... i am switching to hydro because of where my grow room is and the difficulty i will have moving soil to and from it... not to mention the mess i would have to clean up where i would do the work.. so hydro makes more sense... but ive used soil for my own grows for the last few years while i was helping a buddy with his hydro grows... so ive seen and done both... and if i could keep going with soil with the ease i have up until now i would probably stick with it...
thats my 2 cents worth...
