ive been making tea for a few weeks now and the last batch i noticed it had some slime and a bad smell to it. i was told this is because i have it sitting in the sun all day. is this true? should i keep it in a cooler location? the tea looked great other wise and had many many bubbles.

Keep it out of the light, the ideal temps for brewing is around 75.

Also what is in your tea's? And how long are you brewing them for?

well ive been just winging it kinda of but my plants seem to love it. i put in a shovel full of composted horse manure, a few hand fulls of chicken manure, some bat gauno 10-10-2 i think, then i add some morebloom, 0-10-10, molasses, EJ micro blast every other feed, and roots orgenisms with some bokashi.

oh and i brew anywhere from 24 to 72 hours depending how fast i can get to it after work. all this is made up into a 18 gallon bin of water. i think my prob is that it was in sun light alday so it got to hot

Yeah the sun can cook and kill everything. For 18 gallons of tea brewing, I would be sure to add 1 cup of mollases + 2 tbl spoons = 1 Tbl. per gallon. After 48 hours of brewing in prime temps more molasses may be needed, by that time the microbes would of eaten all the molasses and start to feed upon each other. Also I would add your oregonism xl to your brew at the last hour or two of brewing. It does not take long for them (microherd) to wake up.

thank you for that info man, i was only using about a 1/4 cup of mallases so i guess i need to increase that. i will be making more here ina few days hope fully it turns out not as stinky

Teaming with microbes book suggests cleaning your equipment with a mild solution of hydrogen peroxide, helps remove the slime buildup on the side of the bucket and air stones, which if left alone it says can eventually be harmful. After im done brewing every session i let my airstones bubble for 48 hours in a half water, half hydrogen peroxide solution, cleans them up real good

do u have enough bubbles for 18 gallons? maybe its not aerated enough.

i usually clean my bucket with windex to get the big stuff off, then wipe down with paper towels. then i use the hose to rinse it out. then i rub some rubbing alcohol all over the bucket. rinse again with hose.
i should do what chronic said with my airstones

i clean it with lime after every use and once again before i use it.

i dont think i do, it is a smaller pump and 12 inch stone but i dont think the pump is big enough to push air out of it all as i only see air coming out of the 1st 6 inches, it still has alot of bubbles after a few days though, i also stir it a few times a day

you need a bigger air pump. the reason your tea smells bad is because it is not aerated enough and anaerobic bacteria are taking over.
once this happens, u cant just add air. some anaerobic bacteria can survive in aerobic conditions, so u gotta dump it out and start it over. it should smell sweet and kind of like dirt
