That original diesel has a nice structure, I like that a lot. Looks like it will be cool to watch progress.

I like the look of of the perlite on top of the soil.

Do you do it for better reflection, pest control, or other reasons?
Hey there,

Generally I do it to make it less hospitable for gnats, which it seems to help with, and also as a cheap mulch layer...under that perlite layer lies a mat of roots on top of the soil, just under the perlite layer and often times into it.

With the seedlings, same idea, and that mulch layer tends to keep just the right amount of moisture/air ratio to keep them moist as they rise up, but not dry out...as my location tends to have low humidity.

Thanks for checking out the grow. Will be posting some veg photos as well at some point.

Nice. Have you ever considered using a ground cover like clover? Check out from 11:30ish and on...

Besides the ascetic look, it serves a purpose too.

I have been growing for ten years, and have been through everything from no till, to cover crops, to liquid organics, to just water, to super soils, to hydro, to coco, to synth...

Cover crops never appealed to me, would rather allow that entire area to be canna root system. Just my own opinion on the topic. IMO, the organic guys have taken it one step too far with cover crops....sure, if you have an entire bed, like a 5x5 bed, or larger I could see it being beneficial, or outdoors even...but in pots, meh.

Hehehe, just imo of course.

Best results I have achieved is through organics...a balanced soil, with beneficial microbes in the form of compost tea and a few select products, applied often, with a few sugars to feed microherds on the way. No need to go crazy with cover crops or no till. Just a good soil, treated well, keeping microbes happy.
