Out in the woods: 2017

I'll be doing a small outdoor grow this year. I've got 10 plants, and I'll be dividing them up between 2-3 spots in the woods, far away from curious eyes. I started the seeds in red solo cups with only Promix around 4/20 and grew them under a grow light for the first three weeks. This past week I've acclimated them to full sun outside and graduated them to full strength nutes when I water. Today, I transplanted them to one gallon containers with a mix of Promix and compost. In a few more weeks, they will be transplanted to 7 and 10 gallon Smartpots, and then moved to their final homes in the woods.
I am growing 2 Somango (Seedsman), a Cheese, Dieselicious, Furious Candy, Purple Trainwreck, Kritikal-K, Nicole Kush, Grape Kush, and a Karamelo.
This will be my 3rd summer to grow. I've made a ton of mistakes in the past that I'm trying to avoid this go round. Wish me luck. Advice and comments are always welcome.

You sound like you are making good decisions. I've never understood folks who make one big patch out in the woods.

What is your plan for watering? Unless water is easy and close by, you might want to think about planting in the ground. There the pot size is limited only by how big a hole you want to dig.

There are a few creeks close by, but I think they'll go dry because they're shallow. However there's a pond fairly close, so I can haul water without too much difficulty. I grew some in the ground last year, and had a lot more trouble with those plants than the ones I had in smart pots. Thus, my decision to use smart pots this year. I may throw a few in the ground though, just to compare.

If water is no problem, smart pots are fine. It just takes about twice the water than in ground. About once a week is all I can tend mine, so I need all the water retention I can get.

7-10 gallon pots how you transport those to woods. I had trouble getting red solo cups to my patch its a big intense of a uphill hike just food for thought some times move to fast and forget about little things I'd trans plant at the spot.

Rogue, I've already started transporting the Smart Pots out there. I take a couple every time I go "fishing." I'll have them all out there soon. Once the plants are big enough I'll repot them right in the woods.

It's been about a month since my last update. I now have all 10 of my plants in 7 gallon smart pot tucked deep into the woods. They get around seven or eight hours of sunlight a day. This past week I gave them a neem foliar spray a couple times. I'm feeding Dynagro Bloom.

The ladies are all looking great this morning. I fed them with some Dyna Gro earlier in the week. And then late in the week we had 2 inches of rain. I'll go back in the middle part of next week and water them again and give them another feeding.

Hopefully nobody comes across them and all goes well for you ....good vibes your way....when I was younger and grew down by the river ....I would leave tools or even a cheap wallet with a few bucks showing on the way towards my girls ......it's a good way to know if people have been near bye .....I'm sure you have your own security measures that you do ....just food for thought....I have respect for guys who grow this way ......lots of stress....I'm in a legal state with my own property and paperwork in order .....and it's still stressful as it is .....I don't think I could handle the stress/worry you guys go through now .....when I was young i didn't care/worry so it was easy ......so like I said ....mad respect and GL to you

im in a legal state that doesnt bother ya at all and i still go to the bush every year and feel safer than in the yard haha lots and lots of work and worth every bit of it for us

Hey guys. I went and checked on my girls and snapped a few pictures this morning. They're all looking great. We had over two inches of rain and a lot of sun this week. They took to that very well. We're supposed to get some more rain this weekend so I doubt I have to water again for a while. All are looking healthy and all are growing vigorously. The Furious Candy still isn't putting on a lot of vertical growth but it's really bushy. One downside is that I absolutely got covered in ticks this morning when I went out to check them. I'm talking about hundreds of little seed ticks. I'm really going to have to douse myself in some Deep Woods Off before I hit it again.

Get some of the high % deet and spray your shoes and socks really well. Then spray your pant's legs with the normal strength. They climb up from the ground, so your shoes are your first line of defense.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to have to do something. The ticks are really bad here this year

I'm hiking when not in the woods tending my garden, so ticks are always on my mind. I've only had to pick off 5-10 so far this summer. And just one of those were really dug in. The spray I use on my shoes is called Repel 100 {98% deet}. You do not want to get it on your skin, but it will keep the ticks off if you spray your shoes and socks with it.

Sorry to hear about the ticks.

I used to spend a little time in the woods. When I'd come in from a hike, we'd fire up a doobie, have a cold beer and start picking them off me, sometimes there'd be dozens.

You might consider wearing light weight long pants with the ankles taped. (faded green color of course) A little hotter than shorts, but it will keep the ticks off your balls, which is kind of important.

Well, I've managed to make it this far without killing any of them. They're all looking pretty good. I started feeding DynaGro Bloom last week. We've had a lot of rain the last couple weeks so August has been a little cooler and wetter than normal. The plants so far have been loving it; I'm just keeping an eye on them to make sure they don't get mold.

I've managed the tick problem for the most part by taking the advice given here. I've been wearing long pants tucked into boots, and spray myself heavily with Deep Woods OFF. Only one tick got on me today when I went and checked them. Unfortunately it was embedded right in my family jewels.

Because I chose to go with 7 gallon smart pots, the plants aren't very big. Based on my past experience, I'm expecting to average 4 to 6 oz per plant. A couple will produce more than that and a couple might give a little less. Now I've got to start thinking about harvesting and drying. That's where I've always made my mistakes in years past. I've always tried drying outside, not wanting the odors in my house. Unfortunately it's way too hot to get a proper dry and cure here outside. This year I'm thinking about setting up a grow tent with a carbon filter inside a spare room in my house and drying the plants in there. Has anyone ever gone this route?
