Outdoor Hempy Bucket

Hey I'm going to try the Hempy bucket method this season, but I will be doing it outside, It seems like a reasonable idea, seeing as it drains by itself, and is doesnt need much tending to.

Has anyone else used a Hempy Bucket outside?

Idk, because the roots reach the standing water in the bottom of the bucket, and then theyre alright. Atleast thats what I've heard. I'm also in Oregon, and it rains pretty frequently during the summer.

in your neck of the woods i would imagine you could find all sorts of organic goodies for relatively cheap, why a hempy ?

Well I went with soil last year, and didn't get past the first week of veg, so I got incredibly discouraged. I wanted to try Hempy as almost a change in mojo.
What do you mean by organic goodies?

really just organic products in general. out where you are you can get like worm castings, crab shell meal, azomite the list goes on. the good part about it is so many people on the west coast use organic fertilizers and amendments that the stuff is readily available and cheap. out here in the east a bag of worm castings is around $35 for 30 lbs. ! robbery. organics are also not as readily available here as they probably are where you are.

I grew a 7 foot tall tomato plant in a 5 gallon hempy bucket on my deck last year.

It was a test to see if I could reuse my perlite for gardening projects. It seemed to work fine.

I also have a 1 gallon rosemary plant I grew on the deck. And at one time I had a couple hempy clones outside too. All i can say is have fun keeping up with the watering lol

If you can setup something automatic that would be ideal.

when you say outside do you mean guerilla style or at your home?

guerrilla style. I used miracle gro last year, and I think one of the problems was that it got nute burn. I also don't really know of a concrete way to get the seed started, because I tried last year with Jiffy Pellet, and they just stretched and died

the jiffy pellets work, but what it sounds like is you didnt give them proper light if they stretched and if you dont let the seedling develop a root structure before putting it into a soil with lots of nutes, burn baby burn. did you put the baby sprouts directly in mg? did you start your seeds under a light?

I'm not sure what the Miracle Gro had in it, but there was some kind of fertilizer or something. I heard bad reviews about the soil soon after.
I just kept them in a plastic cup by the window sill. Should I invest in a light?

yes i would. i would say you should go with a shop light or two. maybe more depending on your project size. home depot has 4 ft shop lights for $10 each and you can get 10 4 ft. 6500k bulbs for $15. this will be plenty of light for a few weeks and it wont hurt your wallet. get a oscalating fan to blow on them and that will toughen them up as well.

Sounds good, only problem is that I have no space for that. My roomate doesn't want me growing in the house, so I'd have to do it under the radar. Plus the smell will give me a way. I'm only planning on having 5 plants, Is there a way I can squeeze it all into a little tiny grow box with a light that can let it veg for maybe a week?
when does the plant start to smell?

you can get a clip on work light at home depot maybe 2. get the biggest cfl bulbs you can get that are the closest to 6500k get a tote with low sides and a small fan. you can fit this in your closet. you can do this for 2-4 weeks without any smell at all trust me. the first two weeks from seed, your plant will not be growing at a very rapid rate, instead it will be developing a solid root mass depending on what medium your growing in. by the 3rd week, you can transplant into a soil that has nutrients but again try to avoid mg. if it is a must, use mg seed starting mix and follow the instructions on when to transplant into a nutrient rich medium.

if i were you i would start in peat pots or rapid rooters, when seed pops up put plug into a 4 inch pot with seed starting mix, after 2-3 weeks transplant into good potting soil and by week 4 put it outside.
