Outdoor noob

Hi there, huge newbie here from Australia in case the name didn't give it away. Never grown before but looking to get some seeds and plant a few in a garden outdoors in a nice sunny spot, anything I need to watch out for doing this? Right now it's the middle of winter, I'm guessing a bad time to plant? Also when a plant flowers, can I just pick the buds and leave the plant to go around again or do I pick the whole plant? I've looked up some seeds that are suited to outdoors and apparently 'easy' to grow.

Sorry if I've asked super obviously, cringe-worthy questions... I did say I was a noob, lol, I would barely call myself a gardener...

Thanks in advance :)

I am told the best time to start outdoors in Australia is around October. You'll need to chop down the whole plant when you harvest. If this is your first time growing I suggest you do LOTS of research first and prepare yourself well.

1st of all welcome. I am glad you joined and i wish you the best of luck whenever you decide to start your grow. This is a wonderful place to turn for advice, but yes do your homework first, check to see what seeds you want to grow and then what works best in your area and at what time of year is the best time to plant there, and yes you can harvest part of the plant while you give the rest a little more time to grow.

Learn you local pest cycle and rain season. Also if your plant doesn't receive @ least 6 hours of direct sunlight you won't have much bud. Location is important to. Good luck and welcome to RIU.

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. Well October would make it middle of spring here so that makes sense. I have a spot picked out that receives direct sunlight all day, but I'm worried in summer when we get the occasional 40 degree day (or 100 degrees fahrenheit) that it could be too much for them?

So most plants are basically a one time use then? Not like I would have the same tree for ten years?

I was eyeing off some chronic-auto seeds female. Was told they like outdoors and are pretty hardy and easy to grow.

I don't know a lot about outdoor, but from videos I have seen they dig a hole and fill it with quality potting soil and perlite. If it were me I think I'd dig a hole and put the plant in a pot and bury the pot most of the way. Either that or line the hole with plastic or just use the bag it came in and make sure there are holes punched for drainage.

Autos are mostly for areas that don't have a long growing season. No real reason to do autos unless you want to plant before summer. Either way you should probably start them indoors under CFL's then transplant to outdoor when they are a few weeks old.
