my mother is in her early seventies and has hust been told her neck has severe degenerative spondylosis which isn't gonna get any better and is in constant pain so she needs some better meds than the doc is giving her. Been growing for a while now and was after some advice on what strain would be good for how and the best way to take it as she doesn't smoke and has never smoked pot. Dont want to give her a whitey. Think she needs oramorph.

Well. Cannabis high in CBDs are used mainly for pain relief. So those are primarily your Indicas. Pick an Indica Strain that you think SHE would be into; prolly something sweet/fruity. CBNs also reduce inflammation. You can best create CBNs (at the expense of THC, the high) by exposing your bud to low heat. As for administration, I highly suggest the volcano vaporizer. Edibles would be good but may hit her too hard at first.

I would go with a proven kush variety to deal with serious pain....

I've had instances where I've been hitting Kosher Kush and my brain stem has gone numb, and a soothing feeling goes all the way down my spine. Headband Kush would be another medicine worth looking into. Just take them far into flowering to max out the CBD and CBN levels. They are also mighty tasty out of a vaporizer, which would probably be the most effective method of medication, especially dealing with pain.

I will be the first person to admit that cannabis is limited in its pain relief capacities. The cannabinoids don't act in any way with pain receptors, but they do help patients deal with pain. Furthermore, cannabis can be consumed safely IN ADDITION to other pain medications.

Deep Purple would be a strain I would recommend for a High CBD indica....But it takes a while to finish properly (~10 weeks)

How does she feel about the sedative effects from chemical pain killers such as the opiates?

If she is ok with being 'dopey' then maybe Indica strains may be suitable. MY mother experiences severe pain and does not like medication that dopes her. She finds more benefit from more sativa dominant strains that allow her mind to transcend without tiring her. Either way, due to her lack of experience with cannabis I would recommend strains with high CBD content to mediate against any psychoactive effects. Recent research into the way cannabis relieves pain shows that it doesn't block off the pain like standard pain killers, but actually changes perceptions - including the perception of pain. I would say make your mother aware of this, and encourage her to 'day dream' and to loose herself in the thoughts that cannabis brings - this is transcending. It might not offer immediate benefits, but given time she will likely adapt and be better positioned to cope with her pain. I wish you and her both luck with your endeavours.

One strain I feel may be suitable is 'Killing Fields' by Sannie (excuse/ignore the name). It is fairly mild for a sativa dominant, and is very uplifting. The right pheno of that will reduce stress and cause a raising of mood that may be beneficial in changing pain perception. It's certainly the strain my mother benefits from the most.

I also highly recommend you do a search on the term "adaptogen"....

It is a rater awkward concept to traditional western medicine, but I feel like plants have a lot to offer in ways of holistic healing. Funny enough, western medicine is starting to confirm many people's suspicions of "healing" plants by isolating various compounds from them, and then subjecting the resulting compounds to studies.

Holy Basil (also known as Tulsi) changed my life. I've heard several other stories of how maitake and shiitake mushrooms have done the same for other people. Ashwagahnda for others. Siberian Ginseng for others. Terpenes are usually the motor behind these healing properties. Or resins would technically be a better term, being that both primary and secondary resins have been shown to have medicinal benefits.

I'm a little younger than your mom but not by an order of magnitude. Spondylosis and spondylolithesis are things we expect to see if you are lucky enough to live long enough. First your mom needs to start with yoga (stretching, relaxation and mild cardio), and upping the protein in her diet. Pain drives you toward carbs and fats which continue the pain spiral.

As for the pot you maybe surprised about your mom's past LOL! So just sit down with her and tell her you are concerned about her pain and you love her (that in itself will be WAY MORE than enough). Hearing compassion come from your children tells you they have finally become adults and makes you very proud of them and allows you to finally ratchet down some of the worry.

Then offer her help with getting a trial of cannabis for pain just for sleep. So start her off with pot at sleep. What you may or may not find is your mom has tried cannabis in the past. But remember the cannabis your mom and I used in the day was all racy/heady sativa. When you suggest cannabis for pain to someone who last used the racy sativas we think you're nuts. It's the same way we think about growing. Who wanted a 20 foot Sativa tree outside your door? But I digress.

If your mom used back in the day it was joints (without crutches LOL). So roll her a joint using about .3 grams (I started rolling them to small and didn't realize all that harshness was paper from to small a joint ha ha), so roll an appropriate size for her, put a crutch in it for her and give her a small glass pyrex bowl that will hold her joint, a lighter and her ashes and her snuffer. Have her take 2 puffs then place the joint in the snuffer and have her wait 15 minutes to test the effect.

Make sure her bedroom has a clear path to the bathroom and there's a night light. Pot can make us dizzy and certainly the by products of combustion can so you want to guarantee she doesn't fall and break a hip especially since she's doing this at night. Have her test this for a few weeks with 1 to 4 puffs. Also try to get her some Indica mid grade with decent cbd (this ameloriates the anxiety from the THC). But no Sativas (or Sativa dominant phenos)!

One thing you might want to do is have her take 25 mg of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) about 30 minutes before she first smokes. Then invest in a vaporizer if this works for her. I first tried this for pain around 10/2011 and I just graduated to vaporizing 2/16/2013. Only a few puffs every night or at first every few nights doesn't require a vaporizer. However if she shows any type of itch reaction you might want to move her to vaporizing to relieve that. I had a significant reaction in terms of itching (pruritis) and even so didn't need it enough to need to vaporize until the past month or two.

Anyway I hope some of this might help you.

......snip...... Just take them far into flowering to max out the CBD and CBN levels. .......snip......
This is quite true. I accidently took my CC Pre 98 Bubba Kush 14 weeks (family came in for the holidays and I couldn't really be trimming around the kids and grandkids LOL). I figured it was ruined. But what I got is amazing! My THC completely degraded and voila I get the pain relief effect, the muscular relaxation (my muscles feel like they are sliding off the bone), AND a completely clear head which is why I never used during the day I couldn't afford to be out of my head. But a 14 week Bubba did the trick!

Go with an indica strain if you can. I dry my bud, crush and put into capsules. Heating the bud before will give you a good pain killer. I also use cannabis oil in capsule form, when my pain is bad I will ingest up to a gram of oil (run from the cure).

I am taking a 1/2 gram and 5-8 pills daily so taking a gram at one time is no big deal. It really works wonders but you must ramp your use up slowly or sleep a lot.

Good Luck
