Paranoia: Buying a lot at hydro store

Note: This is all assuming your grow is not in your house or you are driving someone else's car who does not live with you.

One thing about cops is they are HORRIBLE at tailing people without being noticed. Some actually do use proper tailing techniques but most are too stupid to know that you have to switch up the tail car and you have to know how to parallel your target (my grandmother could parallel) .

Here are a few things you can do to see if you are being tailed. You want to do several of these and keep track of any cars that keep showing up.

1) When you're coming up to an exit change lanes like you are going to exit but don't exit. Watch to see if any cars behind you change lanes also. Cops are especially bad at working as a team when following. If you have more than one tail they will all fall in line like little robots.

2a) Stop at a fast food place. What you're looking for here is cars that come into the parking lot right after you and no one gets out of the car. If you have more than one tail one will stay with the car and one will stay with you. If you only have one tail it's hard to say what they'll do; depends on why they are tailing you. They want to have eyes on you but they don't want to lose sight of your car either... if they are smart.

2b) How to spot the tail that followed you in: Get into line and order some food then pretend to have left your wallet in the car. Say you'll be right back out and RUN out the door. The cop will freak out and follow you. Also look for anyone using a cell phone. A smart cop WON'T follow you out but will be in comm with his team and will let them know you just left.

2c) How to spot the tail in the parking lot: Look for cars with very dark tint. Look for cars with people just sitting in them. Now, from those cars see if any follow you out of the parking lot when you leave.

2d) Extra Credit: Have someone else take your car and you take theirs. You go to different locations. Again, they should not live with you or otherwise it's pointless. The cops will look up your registrations and know where you live. No need to follow.

3) Make a u-turn. This should only works if they are about to stop you anyway. Only a really, really stupid cop would follow you. There are a lot of really, really stupid cops. They have street smarts from being around really bad criminals a lot but they normal can't think much higher level than that.

4) Get onto an highway going in one direction. Drive in the lane farthest away from the exit lanes. Drive for about 5-10 miles then when an exit is coming up you need to LEGALLY switch lanes really quickly and exit. Get back on the highway and go back the other way. As always you're just looking for cars that make sudden movements to follow you and cars that "reappear" when you're going back the other way.

5) Pull over and park but don't get out of the car. Did the car following you park too? Again, cops aren't trained in subtlety, they are like attack dogs and can't stand to let you get out of their sight.

6) Drive down a dead end street. If any cars follow you make sure they stop at one of the houses. If this happens pull over and see if they get out of their car and go into the house. If they don't stop at a house or just keep following you then you might have a tail.

7) And of course look for tell-tell signs of cop cars; dark tint, ram bars or a really big bumper, and huge flashing police lights... duh. ;)

So, basically the concept is you want to do something that forces the cops to make sudden or obvious movements. And of course you are also looking for repeat customers, the same car you keep seeing over and over. A good team will have several chase cars so you need to not be stoned so you can remember them.

Smart cops with a team won't fall for these. Most cops aren't very smart but don't underestimate them. There are some VERY smart cops out there and if you treat them all like idiots you'll end up with the smart one and you'll get busted. Just assume they are all intelligent, that way you won't be caught off guard.

Venus fly traps are not cloned so to speak. They are reproduced by division of the crown. This means you can break a root ball into 20 pieces and get 20 plants. If you get an intelligent cop he is going to ask why you have cloning gel. Then he is going to ask why you are not growing them in a nutrient free medium and why you have fertilizer because carnivorous plants don't need nutes, they get them from the bugs they eat. He may even ask what species of venus fly traps you have, there are tons of them out there.
If you are going to tell someone you are growing something, you should at least know what you are talking about just incase they know about them as well. If you told me you were growing venus fly traps, but you didn't have a bag of pure peat moss, but instead ocean forest soil and some nutes, I would call you a big fat liar.

Fyi.. they aren't called clones in the gardening scene, they are referred to as cuttings.

Also, tomatoes are pretty much the closest in needs to marijuana.

LOL, yeah, but every time I tell some nosey clerk what I'm growing and I say "Tomatoes" they get a knowing look in their eyes and walk away.

I think "tomatoes" is synonymous with "weed" now.

Actually, in my horticulture text books they are refered to as clones and cuttings. The term clone and cutting are interchangable. In the classes I took to get my horticulture dergree, the prof would call them both. And so would the nurseries we would visit for my plant id class.

Of course they're interchangeable, lol. My aunt and her friend friends have indoor grow rooms for their flowers, fruit, and veggies. They completely geek out about that stuff- but just around those people and in the shops/nurseries I've been, I've personally never heard them referred to as anything but cuttings. Of course, that's just my personal experience. :peace:

LOL.. I could see that.. lol.. maybe we should switch it up to cherry tomatoes or heirloom tomatoes. I got asked once and I told him about the tomatoes, strawberries, and basil I had going.. all of which I truly was growing as well at the time too. LOL..

Yeah, that's what I did the last time. I was at the Wal-Mart (BUG-MART!) and saw some tomatoe plants called Big Boys which I'd never heard of so it stuck in my head. When they guy asked me it popped into my head.

The nearest hydroponics store is 30 miles away so naturally I want to get my shit in as few trips as possible. I'm a bit paranoid so what do people think of going into the store once and buying a shitload of stuff, I'm thinking like a few hundred dollars worth? And it's pretty obvious in this case why I'm buying it. I'll probably be getting this stuff.

foxfarm big bloom nutes
foxfarm grow big nutes
foxfarm tiger bloom nutes
foxfarm ocean forest soil

ph up formula
ph down formula
rockwool cubes
cloning gel

possibly a 250 watt hps
fan timer
water meter

And finally, some way to measure pH and possibly tds or ppm. To go with this, is it absolutely necessary to have a tds meter of some kind even if I just plan on following the foxfarm feeding schedule at low doses, and adjusting concentrations based on how well the plants are doing?

If I must have some way to measure ppm, what meter do you all recommend?

So is it risky to buy this much shit at once? I'm thinking it should be safe since a cop probably won't follow me 30 miles back home. And I'll pay cash. Just looking for some peace of mind I guess.
All that stuff is used to grow tomatoes and other vegetables - no worries. ;)

I've just read that my local hydro store is being watched (Maryland Hydroponics in Laurel). I've only been there twice, once in a car that was registered out of state, and then again in a car that is registered to my house (which has me worried). Both times I only bought a very small amount of items, some GH nutes, mylar, etc.. However if you google "Maryland Hydroponics" there are quite a few posts from 2005 that state many people have been busted because this place is under surveillance. I also used my credit card both times, (like a retard). Now I am SUPER paranoid. I'm thinking about renting out another house and moving everything over there instead. I have not put anything in the trash (thank god) and my heat signature is non-existent. I don't think I was followed, (I drive way too damn fast) but they may have gotten my tags or information from my credit card. Should I be paranoid?

Well just pay it in cash however they can not prove you are growing Marijuana, I mean I bought some Hydro stuff during the summer and grew herbs in my Aero Garden.

I would not worry at all because I saw one post on the internet that was made in 2006 to beware so I doubt they would still be watched.

As one who has worked in the hydro industry for over 2 decades, most hydro stores would prefer you didn't use the old "wink and nod" tomatoes comparison. One of the most common questions we have to correct is "When do I cut my light cycle back on my "tomatoes" (wink, wink)?"

A smart store employee will then have to explain to the customer that you don't have to cut the light cycle back for tomatoes, as they are a "day-neutral" plant that actually prefers about 16 hours of light each day throughout it's growth cycle, vegetative, flowering and fruiting.

He would further explain that if the customer was growing for example, a Chrysanthemum (aka Mums), which is a "short day" flowering plant... which naturally blooms in the fall, when the days are getting shorter... the customer could "force" that mum to flower in the middle of the summer or middle of the winter indoors, by growing the mum at 18 hours per day until you wanted to fool it into thinking it was fall, at which point you would cut the light back to 12 hours on and 12 hours off, which will cause the mum to flower.

Hydro store employees would rather not even have to get into a conversation like the one above. Better to get your growing info from boards like RIU than from the hydro store, unless you ARE growing tomatoes and do want tomato advice... ask away!

And this advice doesn't necessarily hold water in California, where the med mj issue is embraced by some shops and eschewed by others. But in the rest of these United States, better to be plant neutral.

Another point I'll address is parking when coming to the hydro store. For some reason, a lot of folks like to park anywhere but in front of the store... where a "non-suspicious" customer would park. We would always have to laugh at customers who would park away from the store, either across the street, or down the street in another shopping center, come in and buy several large items, and then carry them down to wherever they parked, sometimes wrapped in trash bags at the customers request. We always thought that if leo was watching the store, that they would view that behavior as much more suspicious than someone who pulled up in front of the store and loaded their purchase as they would do at any other retail spot.

The point of being careful is to blend, not stand out like a sore thumb.

Just some sage advice from one who has been around for a few years, no harm intended. VG

Cool info

I've since been there several times and there is no paranoia. It's a family business and the owners are chill as hell. It's even in a location that's a bumfuck small town with a pretty good view of any possible cops parked so it's all good.

Just so you know, it is still illegal federally for the shops to talk about weed. They may do it with their regulars, but not with some random person. Even if they say they have their Rx.

At one of the hydro shops I used to go to, they had a big sign with a pot leaf that said its legal with the state to talk about med mj, but not federally, and thus, they couldn't give you any info on that and would kick you out if you did.

So while some may do it, it is still illegal for them to do it. And you may be comprimising their business if you mention it to them.

well... you could be hydroponically growing a number of things aside from marijuana, so I highly doubt they are going to be suspicious. additionally hundreds of dollars worth of stuff isn't enough for the police to waste their time investigating what with actual drug crimes, rapes, murders, robberies going on around the area. Im sure you're the last on the list of people they care about.

even if someone did question your intentions buying the materials to do hydro is not illegal and you should not answer any questions about your intentions for use of items.

and yea. like someone said... a cop shows up at your door just tell them to fuck off in nicer terms. but that isn't going to happen.

the only thing Im extra cautious about is I typically pay in cash, so its not on my card. but that doesn't really matter, just my personal preference unless Im ordering online which I find to be perfectly safe.
