Ok, this is a multi-part rant. I welcome comments especially from the females as this has a little to do with what happened today.
My daughter is 15 and had a consultation visit with the OB/GYN today. Next thing I know she is coming out and the doctor had given the HPV shot to her.
Now in a way this totally pissed me off. Not for the fact of getting the shot, but for the mere fact I as the adult parent and was never consulted. The doctors told me that for the most part, she(kids) does not need parental permission for things along these lines.
I see major problems with this. First the doctors are taking permission from a kid that may not be well versed enough to make that decision on their own, other than just taking the doctors word for it. They may not know the questions to ask, etc, there are several factors that I think the parent should be consulted as well. I just dont believe kids are well-informed enough to make certain decisions on their own.
Enter conspiracy theory. The way I see it, the pharmaceautical companies have lobbied to allow doctor and patient(specifically minor patients) to make decisions without the parent. With all the hoopla about birth control, HPV etc, I can see where some parents would think that this condones the child to have sex at young ages. I myself do not particularly believe this. I believe the pharmaceutical companies noticed this and that the parents were blocking them by not allowing their kid/s to receive drug treatments. So, again, the drug companies win again by taking my rights away from me, because parents were getting into their bottom line by not allowing the docs to prescribe BC, HPV, etc.
Simple fact, I had several questions I would have asked the doctor about receiving the shot. I am not saying I was going to allow or disallow her receiving the shot, but I feel as if I should have been consulted first. For the most part the doctor said he wanted to give her the shot and she said ok without asking a single question. I am just pissed because as her caretaker and provider I feel as if I have every right to know every thing about her medical treatments.
If I am wrong please enlighten me, I accept the fact I may be missing something. And any ladies that want to comment on the HPV shot please feel free. I am trying to make my decision as to take her back for her second injection. I am a single dad, so I may not totally understand everything, but I try and my daughter and me are pretty open about stuff, so I dont have problems in talking with her about it.
