The Spartans were not gay, gay didn't exist then. They had wives at home but the men could be on military campaigns for months, so they serviced each other like bosses for purely practical reasons.
That's because "back then" it wasn't demonized by the church. It was just normal. The irony being that the catholic church is the gayest institution in the land.
There were obviously gays too, but they just didn't like women.
