When I ran soil, I would add perlite. The volume I used depended on the soil I was using.

My aeration is almost 50% of my mix now. In 13 cubic ft of soil, I've got 3 cu ft of lava rock, and 3 cu ft of perlite.

I used a 4:1 ratio for FFOF to Perlite, and so far everything is fantastic.

I see people using 10%, 20% in living soil etc also seen people use 50% to all perlite, there's loads of I do in Forum.

It really depends on how much you wish to water, and in turn feed your plants.
More perlite, more drainage, quicker drying.

I added perlite to fox farm OF my last round. Unfortunately I ended up with moisture gnats living in the soil and I feel it was because of the extra airspace the perlite created. Beasts were a pain to get rid of..

This is a huge reason I use an inch of perlite on top of my soil. It breaks the breeding cycle and fast.

Adding to the top of the soil instead of mixing it into the soil? Not sure I follow what that does to break the breeding cycle?

I do believe they are the same thing.
Generally fungus gnats appear when the soil has not been allowed to dry out.
Many times they come with the bag of soil we buy for our plants.
