perserving clones?

hey guys im just thinking ahead... i got some clones from a friend to start growing myself of a strain that he has been breading and i was wondering if when the time come and i want to take clone clippings from my own plants how of if i can preserve them because the flower cycle is about 9 weeks long... now my friend lives about 1000 miles away and i barely got the clones here in the first place and i don't think getting new ones every time is an option, so my question is if theirs a way to preserve them till my next grow. or is the only way have them root up in a plastic cup (what i was doing before i transplanted them) and keeping them alive... i want to avoid having a mother plant because at the moment i don't have enough space... i thought this would be a little advanced for any other category in the forum... any thought questions or comments would help a lot thanks!

ps i am relatively new to growing but i feel like im doing really well i have been doing A LOT of research and the only thing i dont have is experience so thanks for your input.

Just keep it in a vegetative cycle (18/6 or 20/4) for as long as you need to. Prune or LST to keep the height down. Good luck!

Yup, unfortunately there is not much of a way to preserve clones. Ive cut them and put them in the fridge for a week and then cloned em but no 9 weeks. Grow them out and trim them like the others have suggested.

Try to find the space for a mom, all you need is a fluorescent really to keep her going in the veg state.

The best way to preserve clones over long periods of time would be to use plant tissue cultures. It sounds very difficult on the surface, but in reality it's very easy.

Essentially, you are taking a DNA sample and preserving it by freezing. Then, when you want to bring back that strain you simply grow the plant out from the DNA. It's also very inexpensive. My local shop sells the kit for around a hundred bucks.

Google "plant tissue culture" and you can find all the info you need.

I'm trying that tissue culture. Looks like a great educational opportunity, plus looks like it has potential for the long term preservation of genetics.

Awesome man. I haven't tried it yet but someday when I start breeding seriously I will. I have lost moms that I still get very upset over losing. If I had simply plucked a few leaves and stored them using that plant tissue culture I could have brought them back.

I have a few friends that do tissue cultures with success.

Makes me wonder if this is what noah used on the arc to store all the planets biology. Something like this anyway.
