Ph Question

I just got a pH meter and I have read that in a soil grow the pH of the water must be 5.8-6.2. Now I gave my plants water 6.8-7.0 and the run off water was 5.4, my question is which pH should be 6? Cause if I give it 6 the runoff pH will be lower than 5.4.. What am I doing wrong?

Fuck! Man you need dolomite for your girls! Dolomite lime will stabilise your soil ph to around 7. you running soil, or soiless mix? cause there is quite a difference.

Forget stuffing around with runoff, just make sure all waterings and feeding go in at 6.5.

I have a mix of barn manure peat moss and compost and perlite not sure why this is happening in my country I cant find the common brands So I have to use what I can find the pf of the compost is 6 and this is my base

Your basically gonna have to do a flush. Keep flushing til the ph of run off is around 6.5.. Then empty your drain pan and check again in bout an hour.

If the ph of your base is 6 then your going to have to add some dolomite or equiv to help buffer ph at a more neutral level

I would also suggest some Lime, dolomite is fast working and will make your soil PH close to neutral..

I use Mearl from Plagron

oceanic Lime, also fast working and full of nice trace elements aswell, I use it in my soil mix but can also be used like dolomite lime as a top dressing (a few table spoons on top of your soil before you water)

egg shells can be used but is slow working (not for you at this point) and work best if compost with the soil/soilmix

here is a PH sheet I like better

and as some all ready said, most important in soil beside the right PH to start out with (6-7 PH) is to water with water that is around them numbers most try to aim for 6,5

p.s.

dont look to much at run off, wont tell you much, unless you monitor it from the start and act on changes (big changes)

use a soil test kit instead if you really want to make sure:

run off wont tell you much, as you begin to add nutriens your run off will flush some of that out, and that will lower your PH, so in basic the more nutriens in the soil the lower PH of the run off.

I can tell you out of experience that if you water a hugh plant in flowering with 6,5 PHd water the run off often come out around 5,5 to 6

if anything the soil should buffer it, but if you think have to much nuts in your soil, you could do a flush (water with 6,5 PHd water in a 2x the amount of soil, etc 5 gallon soil use 10 gallon water) some say 3x but not necessary in my opinion ..

so te dolomite lime will put the soil at ph7 then I can work from there also i have 4 gallon pots ow much do I add?

yes, get the dolomite lime (cheap at big garden centers aso)

use like two spoon full, spread/shake it out on your top soil and water with normal temperated 6-7 PHd water ..

can repeat it agin in a few weeks to keep it at a neutral level, this should solve your problem and also add some Calium and other trace elements that help the plant take up the important nutriens ..

bro its being over complicated, all the advise u have been given is correct but just simply checking that everything u add to ur soil is 6.5 is so much simpler, do a flush every two weeks if u wanted to build on it. goodluck
