I own a whole bookshelf FULL of books I try to push off on other people all the time! Read these, they're good for your mind!I don't have, own, or read a book that I push on anyone.
The most important thing is the freedom to believe what you want without others judging you, killing you, pushing you into a sense of false security while raping you of your cognitive functions.
Paleolithic Prescription- the best diet book, ever.
Guns, Germs and Steel, Dr. Jared Diamond- best history book, lays the foundation of all other history.
Collapse, also by Dr Diamond- THIS is Prophecy of the sort I can believe in. Using examples of failed civilizations throughout history, he fleshed out exactly why we humans are doomed if we remain on this planet.
I also have Michael Carlisle's bicycle racing training and coaching guide for future Lance Armstrong types (funny, it doesn't mention doping).
Musashi's Five Rings is a good philosophy primer, and an excellent introduction to the pithier Art of War by Sun Tzu.
Seneca was a lazy bastard who couldn't be bothered to scratch his own ass without a bad attitude. So I don't have any of his grumpy shit.
Socrates was fascinating, but we as a civilization have thankfully moved on.
Asimov and Heinlein. And Cherryh. And Niven. William Gibson. These are my prophets, because they guessed at the future with clear eyes.
My mission in life is about leaving something behind others can chew on, whether that's a meal from hydroponic equipment I helped develop or food for thought.
