Joe, they are as brown as they are shown in the lower picture, on this plant all of them are that brown. The upper picture is a different plant, 50% of them are brown the others on that plant are in the process of browning.

3 weeks on the first, another 10 - 14 days on the second. Nice looking plants

If those plants are only 3 weeks old I would say they have been in contact with pollen.
