I have a couple of 1lb containers of Hg myself. In proper containers tho so pretty secure. When I was in grade 5 we had a barometer in the room that was just a long glass tube with the top closed off sitting in a small beaker of mercury. I used a syringe to swipe about 2 or 3cc worth and used to play around with it in my bedroom. Pretty sure I contaminated the hell out of everything in that room but didn't seem to have any ill effects on me.
