Something about micro grows intrigues me. I'd like to design a grow box that could be easily and inexpensively reproduced so as to get my friends and family involved in the joys of plant Cultivation.
Box should be
Here are my thoughts.
1 x 1 x 5 ft cabinet (Good height to dissipate heat)
Material would be some kind of thin, light wood. My friend who is a cabinet builder suggested masonite.
3 26w CFL bulbs of varying spectrums.
2 gallon pot with tray.
Passive intake hole near bottom with 90 degree elbow.
Outtake would be either a computer fan, wired 4 inch fan from Walmart or a small carbon filter..
A few questions. would it be be optimal to use the R40 spotlight cfl bulbs since they have a built in reflector? This would save needing to build a reflector?
A 3 way ceiling light fixture would seem to be a good way to mount lights cheaply.
We are thinking the box could be masonite, but we may need to build a frame. Another idea is to use aluminum to build the frame. Then cover with the masonite or wood veneer.
If the box is 1ft square then 3 bulbs should be enough light. What do you guys think? Call it 3400 lumens with excellent refection since the space is small.
The finished product would look nice and clean and be self contained and allow anyone to put assemble the kit and pop a seed. Nutrients and simple growing instructions would also be provided.
I'm up for any suggestions. This might be a fun project for us all to work on.
Box should be
- Safe
- Low Cost
- Easy to assemble
- Light tight or as much as possible.
- Decent looking from the outside
