Plant surgery:An ear full of nothin

At the beginning of my endeavor I had 8. Two didn't do squat. Six sprouted but 2 kicked it early, they still had the seed husks on em, that's 4 left. These did alright until I notice one taking to long to stand up<<when the cotyledon leaves separate and fan out making way for the first set of true leaves>> on closer inspection I notice a thin skin left behind by the husk, so I carefully peel it off, thinking I fixed the prob. NO. After a few days the leaves did not separate, the stem was not growing taller, the plant was still at ground level and arched to one side due to the leaves not separating, the tips of the leaves actually touched the ground still. The odd thing was that the leaves seemed to be trying to separate and true leaves started poking out... I got out the razor and tried to separate them manually, I ended up cutting them apart like an envelope with a letter opener, after that I pretty much left it alone.........The plant is now still at ground level, the stem never grew and it seems to be saved but different. I'll post pic of (hopefully)her real soon so you all can see.
There is a question here, is the length of the stems necessary for a plant when your supplying plenty of light and there are no surrounding competitors to shade the plant. Wouldn't it be more energy efficient to transport vital nutrients and h20 shorter distances. And what could be some downfalls of such a plant.
