Pond Liner?

Where i live it is difficult to find large plastic containers that are suitable for growing. The only ones i have access to aren't food grace and the shape of the lid makes it difficult to drill holes as the plastic just splits. So would it be ok to use pond liner instead?

What i mean is building a simple wooden frame, lining it with plywood to create a box and then lining the inside with a pond liner to waterproof it. Sealing the box would be simple but is pond liner safe to use or does it leech chemicals into the plants? I know pond liners are designed to support fish and plant life so i would think they're clean to use.

Any help would be great.

I used pond liner from home depot (the better quality grayish/black/rubbery texture) originally for overflow with soil,6x6 with 6" sides. I then converted it to flood and drain. Worked great for 4 grows. I got a leak in 1 table and replaced the liner with the cheaper black. The cheaper stuff did seem to leech into the plants creating a grow that withered on the vine - so to speak. The plants (4` high) just dried up while flowering

Ok cool a reply :)

Was the cheaper stuff PVC? The more expensive stuff uses LDPE (same stuff as tupperware) so i imagine that's what you used at first. Still if you know what it was made of that would be great :) It sounds as if it could be used and it would solve some big headaches for me as i just can't get the big containers :(

Have you checked Craigslist for food grade 275 gallon syrup containers? I used two of these for my aero setup instead of building the setup you proposed with pond liner. They ran about $90 each. You can see what I'm talking about on the first page here:

I have found nothing on craiglist nor any other website that ships to my country, at least not for a reasonable amount, but thanks for the reply. At the moment i think i'll stick with the pond liner i just need to find the right kind. LDPE seems suitable but i'm hoping the other guy above remembers which material killed his plants.
