normally i would be in the "get over it" camp, but if i were running a brand, and one of the faces of my brand said what she said, i wouldn't want to be stuck in a boat with a hole either.
it's not the remark she made 30 years ago, it's the allegations of things that happened much more recently. the lady suing her says that her co-owner bubba made black employees use the restroom in the back while allowing white employees to use the nice customer bathrooms, called them monkeys, and that they both freely dropped n bombs.
the part that made me raise my eyebrows was this quote here that deen allegedly made to her then caterer for bubba's wedding in 2007:
"Well what I would really like is a bunch of little niggers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around. Now, that would be a true Southern wedding wouldnt it? But we cant do that because the media would be on me about that."
it's one thing to be an old ignorant racist, but the bit about the "media being on her for that" shows that she knows exactly what she's saying. the lawsuit is full of alleged examples of her and the staff throwing the word around. another one is that bubba supposedly said something like "they should send president obama to the oil spill in the gulf of mexico so he could nigger-rig it."
i'm pretty sure that any black people working for these people were offended frequently, and they would only be hearing the toned down stuff. i'd fire her ass, too.
