Hmmmmm..Hi there I work for Royal Mail as a postman have done for 13 years now im probably setting myself up for a load a shit but some of the things said are not correct.
First and foremost i work hard the same as many other people, i will admit that there is a certain element within the company should i say " the old guard" that are stuck in there ways , not open to change and do run to the union as soon as something doesn't suit. As Royal mail is now in the market place as it were and they are open to competition eg TNT, it is only right that they have a level playing field. Part of the distribution ( getting the mail from the mail centres to the delivery office's ) has been sold off to TNT already, this has been done to utilise the machinery that they already have in place which is far more advanced than the equipment Royal mail has for the sorting of the mail Thus saving Royal Mail ( The Goverment, The Tax Payers ) millions . Obviously with the competition paying half the hourly rate that Royal mail pay savings need to be made. Mail volume on a Tuesday and a Saturday is and always has been low compared to the rest of the week , thats the only reason you may get your mail earlier on these two days again i can only speak for myself but is certainly is not because i dawdle every other day of the week my delivery takes me 5 hours most days and its a killer. It stands to reason that to lose a days delivery on either a Tues or Sat is the best way to go as no-one can touch us when it comes to delivery of mail across the uk can you imagine the logistics involved if another company tried to take that on? you would not see any mail for days. Another thing im sure you may have noticed is that that 90% of the stuff that comes through your letter box is complete shit that you never wanted don't even look at and throw straight in the bin we call this mailsort it's just crap that a company sends out on spec you know the sort Double Glazing, begging letters etc makes no sense to pay people for delivering crap that people dont even want. Today being a Sat i delivered four bags of this shit and if i said 100 letters had a stamp on them i would not be lying, better to lose a day utilise the hours saved over the rest of the week job losses and voluntary redundences are inevitable but theres always casualtys in war..Lets be honest it isnt going to kill you to wait an extra day for your Amazon, Play.com, E.Bay purchase and there isn't to much you can do nor would want to do with a bank statement or a bill on a saturday is there ? The companys that you guys get your DVD's off would just alter their delivery schedule im sure that you would not even notice the change.
In the current economic climate there has to be changes Royal Mail are just looking outside the box to make themselves a more viable buisness, if they become privatised completely it will be gone never to return and your mail will be delivered by the highest bidder i cannot stress more what a complete fuck up this would be as regards you having mail delivered six days a week or even five, not forgetting of course that Royal mail is about the last thing British there is and once it's gone it's gone. This isnt a rant and i hope it isnt taken as one just my opinion and a few facts to be going on with, Happy smoking.
