Onions are really inexpensive to buy wouldnt you be better off growing something worth more money?

Home grown organic produce is what you are missing
Onions are difficult to grow here as well, my advice is to plant them as early as you can, they can take a light frost.
Also make sure to water quite often.

If U want a good size bulb 'a great trick, is when there about 70% of the grow cycle, bend em over, i just walk on mine. & this will stop as much goodness going to the leaves,& put it into the bulb ,
Do weekly , as they spring back up pretty quick Also at this point, use a low nitrogen fert , or a flower nute like 6-14-12 or thereabouts if seed heads start to appear , just chop em out , the plants energy needs to be directed underground at this stage, not above

Another usefull tip ,is if planting seedlings, after there planted,come along with scissors & cut the top 2 thirds of , this compensates for root damage, &doesnt leave as much for the roots to support , the seedlings respond a lot quicker

Mulch is the answer for growing good onions.
