How important is the height of your growing pot for root growth?. My vertical space is on a tight premium, and was thinking of growing in a trough like pot where I can get a good volume for a smaller height pot. I just wondered if height was more important to roots than overall volume.

If vertical space is tight go with the biggest containers you can, smaller containers seem to make my plants stretch more. Every time you dump a root ball out of the containers after harvest where do you see the roots? They are on the bottom and spread out...so...I'm thinking wider may be more important than taller for containers but never really experimented with it, all I know for sure is if the roots get tight the plants stretch too tall, hope this helps some.

Yoy can use a SCRog (screen of green) to control height. It's basically a netting or chicken wire that sits directly over the plant. The plant then grows into the screen. You just keep pulling new growth under the screen effectively controlling the height you want. Using this method allows you to use what ever size pot you have or want to use.
You could also bonsai the plant, it involves taking the plants root ball out of a container then cutting the outer edge of the roots with a Sharp knife. Just repot the plant into a new container with fresh soil.
You can also use the LST technique (low stress training) which involves tieing string to the main stalk then taping or securing the string to either the container itself or something heavy outside the container, you basically bend the plant and train it to grow low.
You can flower earlier to keep the plant small, just watch out for lanky tall sativas. Realistically the most ideal type of cannabis to grow is indica. Indica's generally will be short and bushy.
I also recommend researching superroots airpots. They completely eliminate root circling and promote microroots. a healthy root structure means a healthy and resilient plant.

i experimented with this exact deal when i tried to grow in a PC case
cut off a gallon water jug to get a half gallon pot, it was 4 inches deep
i had miserable luck with that thing, plant wouldn't grow worth shit
this was a clone that i had grown in the same soil mix with good results before
and when i transplanted it to a 2 gallon container, it recovered and took right off
so small pots can be a problem, my result seemed worse than others
i have read that organic soils may be more demanding with a larger pot size

My total height is 70cm or 2.2ft which I know is really tiny, I'm creating a semi stealth scrog grow inside a chest of draws, which I got for £16 from Tesco's

My reflector is 12cm/5" deep, so I have about 58cm/2ft to play with. Hence my original question about the pots height, I just wondered if i could use a wider shallower type pot ans i have 2sq ft of potential space for the length and width of the pot. I'm trying to roughly work out the gaps between my pot and the wire and the space between the wire and the lamp taking in to account growth and lumen per foot needed.
As a little experiment i have my bulb on in the background taking a temp from 6" uncooled..just for a little incite to temps generated., wow 94 deg f, hotter than i expected for a little hps.

If you are going to pick strains from seed vendors I'd try to look for lowryder or easyryder strains as they grow short and almost all are auto flowering
