pot saucers

someone had told me that i should drain all the excess water out of the saucers under the pots after watering or it will cause root rot? any one have any thoughts on this?

Yeah,best not to leave standing water. I try not water to the point of a lot of excess water in the saucers, but it happens sometimes. With just a few plants you can use a turkey baster to suck the water out without moving the plants. With a lot of plants I have a shop vac with a big straw like attachment on it.

I always water then dump the trays of all standing water.

I water, then go downstairs for like 15 minutes to let it all get thru the pot then i come back up and swap for an empty one and dump the full one.

so i shouldnt have much watering coming out into the saucers? ive been having a lot come out....and when i flush it should i have a lot of water come out to make sure it gives a good flush or no?

I don't agree with that. In most mediums especially something like coco you should have at least 10-20% runoff, meaning about 10-20% of what you put in should be coming out. I only water/fed to where nothing comes out if I fed late into the light cycle. If my lights go off at 8am and it's 6am and I need to water/fed I will just fed enough to get the soil damp.

I guess it is a matter of opinion, I dont water to the point of runoff intentionally and everything seems fine..I pick the pots up (5 gal coco/perlite mix)) to make sure they feel heavy though.
