PPM to high? 460 tap water / 2000 feed

Hey guys, first time checking the PPM of my solution and the feed ppm seems very high. Mind you it is a cheap ebay digital display ppm/ec meter but brand new and water being checked as per the instructions.

Growing in coco/perlite, 3 gallon fabric pots, hand waterring every other day.

My tap pulls water from my private unfilterred well. And straight water measured @ 460ppm. I added seedling strength ammount of GL flora grow and CalMag, and ph down, to the water and ppm rose to 730. This water was used to hydrate some clones.

I then made a 2 gallon mix of nutes for the feed cycle for my flowerring plants. GH Flora Trio + CalMag + PH Down. This solution measured @ 2050ppm I believe. Giving slightly less than the feed chart recomends.

Are these numbers not sky high for a little hand waterred setup under a 600hps in coco? 2 of my flowerring plants seem to be loving life and are lush healthy green and budding incredibly for only 4 weeks in, while the last plant is also budding large, it is also yellowing from the top down which doesnt fit many descriptions for health issues

Yeah that's high for pots of coco. Actually I'm surprised you even drink that water with the high mineral content, assuming you do. Since you added cal-mag, you probably have too much cal and/or mag. Pretty sure you won't be needing any of that product. You may also have over adjusted the pH unless you checked it. You didn't mention having a pH meter.

why would you add calmag to your well water of 460ppm? :wall:
me thinks your private well may have some other stuff in it you might not like. sounds like pudding to me.

get yourself a pack of calibration liquid for your ppm meter, google dnr, they mail you a little bottle and will test your water, identify the ppm's and oother nasties if they exist. its a good place to start when growing marijuana.... with quality water

save up for a filter

The private deep well tests fine for drinking, and testing is required here, was tested very recently, but they dont disclose/send you the data of the mineral breakdown. Calling 430ppm tap water "pudding" is a little extreme, as this bottle of spring water Im drinking for lunch has 522pm listed on the front label. My concern was after adding 6ml/gal nutes etc, the number had jumped 4-5 times greater

I was adding calmag because of the literature Ive read of coco grows needing it, and I had no idea if I am giving the plant any/enough, as this was the first time sticking a ppm meter in any solution, I have added calmag for the last 2 grows and had successful harvest with no issue, but maybe its un-needed for me, maybe less than suggested doses of nutes aswell if Im getting reading so high?

I do test ph, straight out of the tap it is low 7's, and 1/8th tsp DutchNutrient pH down per gallon brings it to 5.4-5.8

I have 8 plants soon to follow and would like to feed them correctly from the start with the nutes I have (GH Flora trio)

I use that same nutrients, FloraNova Grow. If you put 4 mls per quart it's just right for drain-to-waste type feeding, around 1000 ppm. The drained water usually comes out around 1500. Needless to say, with your mineralized water drain to waste is the only system you could use, because topping up would quickly build up salts. I guess if you started with almost 500 ppm water it would then be that much higher ppm than what I said.

Im looking into collecting rain water this season.

I have to feed the plants tonight, should i try a half dose of nutes? A ballpark ppm I should stay under regularly

My well water tests out at 40 ppm. Yes, 400 is high for a starting point.

Rule of thumb in soil is ppm of added nutes shouldn't exceed light watts.

Fwiw, you can take a water sample to a lab and they will tell you the mineral breakdown for like $65. Lowe's and home depot have free water testing but I've never used it so don't know what they tell you.

Home depots tests prompts a sales agent to ring your doorbell selling rental services. With no mineral breakdown in hand

I just use a ZeroWater ion exchange water purifier, under $50 at Walmart. It's enough for a small setup like yours. Granted if you have high mineral water the filters would need changing more often. I would at least use one for drinking water if not the plants.

Ditch the cal mag and use just the three part and ph down. Just use less nutes so you dont get a salt buildup. You may flush with phd water before tho since im guessing theres alot of salts already in there
