What’s up RIU,
I’ve been lurking in the LED forum for a little bit now, but I have learned most of my stuff from growmou5’s YouTube channel (Shout out. You’re one hella smart dude, my dude).
I’m currently looking to build a COB system for a 4x4 grow space inside a 6x6 closet. I know this is a very typical grow space, which is why it is so surprising I haven’t found my answer yet.
I know I want to have 1 COB per ft2, which means 16 COBS for the 4x4ft space.
Now comes the tricky part. Deciding between the CXB3590 or the Vero29 Gen 7 and which Driver(s) to use.
Here are my thoughts:
The CXB3590’s are more efficient when ran at lower volts and outperform the Vero’s when ran at 36v. BUT if you were to increase the Volts per COB, the Vero pulls away in performance in terms of lumen output. I would prefer to use the Vero29 Gen 7’s because they are cheaper and produce more light at higher Volts.
The Vero29 Gen 7 I am specifically referring to is BXRC-35E10K0-C-7X
My question is, what drivers should I use to give me the most light with this COB? 4 lights per driver?
I was thinking since I need 16 cobs, I could split it into 4 lights per driver. My only concern with that is that I wouldn’t be cranking the Volts high enough on the COB to push it to the max flux it’s rated at. I might as well stick with Crees at that point. In order for it to be worth getting the Veros, I think I need each COB to be at least 69.4 Vf, but ideally more like 74.4Vf to hit max lumens.
That being said, which driver can accomplish this? I am leaning towards the Inventronics because they pull more power than what they are rated for, and run over 10 degrees cooler than the Meanwell counterpart. I just have no idea which model.
Also, this may be a poor way of looking at things, but as a kicker, I know it takes appx. 650 W of CREE/Vero29 COB LEDs to have the same lumen output as a 1000W HPS, and I know it takes a little less than (2) 1000W HPS to have optimal light in a 4x4 [(2) 600W HPS for example], So I am assuming I need a total of close to 800-900W of COB LED, which would be about 4 drivers I think. But this is why I am asking you guys. I don’t have enough experience with this. I know it’s relative to how many COBs I have per driver and which drivers I choose.
Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated. FYI - I’m looking to buy these LED’s and Drivers tonight.
Thanks RIU Fam!
