Most 1st /2nd grow don't do well because of the learning curve with simply growing. While learning, most seem to "grab at straws" and the first straw is always the soil.
So they switch,, do a third grow with their new found knowlege in super soil and declair their "Luck" with MG was terrible and thus must be crappy soil. While completely forgetting to mention that their change of lights, heat, nutes, Ph, waterings, beans, etc. also could of been a bigger part (or all) of it.

I've used the Moisture Control for awhile now and very happy with the results. I do think one needs to learn the soil (any soil) to make it work to potential.

I am considering going hydro, myself, very seriously. This run will be soil, but in the meantime, I'm going to build an aeroponic system outta PVC pipe, similar to those I've seen in High Times. That'll also give me time to look into some journals that are setup similarly, and get some ideas. Aside from the excellent performance, the main draw is that once I have it setup, it should be pretty easy to maintain. I hope to have it running, so that I don't have to do much during the week, and can let it take care of itself(for the most part), til Saturday and Sunday, when I have lots of free time.

the Bloom ferts that you mention, where those MG or another brand? Also if you don't mind, what minor tweaks are you thinking of trying? Im curious as MG is my only choice as of now.

I'm currently running MG Bloom Ferts on one that is 4 weeks from harvest. They worked fine for me, just make sure you only use half the recommended dosage cause they recommend WAY to much for container growing.

I am however switch to Jack's Blossom Bloomer for my next group. It's cheap and I like the ratio 1-3-2

Ok thanks for the info. After reading this thread and the FF vs MG, I think I will start with MG organic and let that carry it to flower, where I switch to MG Bloom. Sound like a plan?

It'll work and it'll give you a chance to see how the plant grows and see how it reacts to changes you make in it's environment for the first time. I'm surprised my first plant even made it at all, with all the changes and mistakes I made. MJ is a very hardy species. Some people on here make it an art and can keep their plants 100% happy 100% of the time, but I would say the majority of us still finger through our problems one mistake at a time. Have fun, don't sweat the small stuff, and best of luck on your first grow!

Well, the only tweak that I was thinking, was introducing some weak veg fert, around week 4, possibly 5, depending on their current size. When I say weak, I mean my Dynagro, at 1/4 strength.(full strength is 7-9-5) It's a very minor tweak, probably just two doses, before switching to the bloom fert. I'm just looking for a tad more stretch, in early flowering. Yeah, I know, most people try to avoid that, but in my case, the stretch was kept minimal, and I think I could've increased yield a tad, with another inch or two of growth. Aside from that, there wasn't a single problem, and I was quite happy with the results. The Ice plants in my signature, each yielded 3-4 ozs dry wt., and were all 24" or less, finished heigth. I want a QP per plant, damnit!LOL

EDIT: They also started to yellow a week or so, early, in late flowering, which is another reason for the extra bit of veg fert. As mentioned above, some of us have the NEED to get it as close to perfect as possible, and are continuously adjusting. For that reason, I'm delaying getting into hydro. I can see obsessive compulsiveness brewing, there.LOL

thanks guys im doing a grow with one of my buddies and they are getting all pissed saying MG will lower the THC levels during the flowering stages, i have 9 plants under 4 400 CFLs and they are doing great but he keeps on insisting that we change the soil. and BTW this is my first grow so thanks for all the help and backing me up

I have always grown with miracle grow but recently made the switch to coco coir because i heard all the smack talk about miracle grow. When i made the switch my plants had ph burn and several problems. With miracle grow i could be stingy with nutes and be very laid back and it always caught my mistakes. Oh how i love you miracle grow. Infact im gonna go buy some right now and put my seedlings in them. One problem i noticed though is yes what was previously said, i have alot of fungus nats. I would buy the miracle grow and maybe add a bit more perlite for drainage and put rocks on bottum for aeration

Lol, don't listen to your buddies. Soil does not decide how much THC a plant strain contains. Genetics decides THC levels. Now environment can and will decide how big your buds get, but it has nothing to do with THC content of said buds.

thanks a munch they are retarded, another quick questions i have them on 18 hrs of light a day and they arent flowering they are about a month an half old is that ok? and when they start to flower what amount of time should the lites be on?

If your using CFL's then change the bulbs to 2700k or at least add some 2700k bulbs with your 6500k bulbs and set your lighting to 12 hours on and 12 hours off.

I have grown with MG Organic Choice several times and have NEVER been disappointed. I did amend with MG perlite for better drainage for flushability.

Completely agree, every time I have grown with it, it's alway's been succesfull!

I only thing I've noticed about the mg moisture control the pH is kinda whacky. thats about it, other than that its just fine imo. esp if it's the only soil you can get your hands on. Sure there are better mixes that are out there, or can be modified per your preference at your own expense. I got some MG going right now along side FFOF. both soils work for me.

m.c was full of pests. Flies & mold. It wasent what the plants wanted because im on my second grow with the same (2) strains and they are by far happier with the soil I picked up at the grow shop. You can get good soil online also. Vegetable season is comming up real quick its not illegal to order good soil if you are going to spend three months applying yourself to something a good medium to grow in is elemental then again people grow in all kinds of sh** literally : ) m.c does have a rep for flies but if its your only choice get some neem oil and treat from the get go!!!
