pulling a male before pollination

Hi, I want to make sure the plant is male before I pull it I want to see it's distinguished characteristics. I have a budding lady next to it. I mean I can probably tell you 50% its a male. I'm just being cautious because last plant I was thinking it was a male turned out to be a female. Thus the question arises. How soon do males shed pollen? Do the banana ball shapes have to be open or can they pollinate before that even?
