Question about growing medium

Would it be possible to use some sort of growth medium with the same qualities as dirt, but not be dirt, like sand or something? You'd just have to add fertilizer. I know I'm basically describing hydroponics, the difference is that there wouldn't be a pump, and the medium would have the same drainage as normal dirt. Could you use another medium just as you would dirt, with no pump or anything?

If this were possible, one could re-use the same medium, right?

Your basically describing a hydroponics system with coco... coco is a medium which is completely devoid of all nutrients, similar consistency as soil. You dont need a pump, you can ahand water with a nutrient solution just as you would with soil (all nutrients are fed to the plant via watering) Coco will dry out a little faster than soil generally.
You cant really reuse coco, after you harvest the plant the roots will have pretty much filled the pot (hopefully) and the whole thing is so compact it would take a hell of alot of effort just to reclaim a small amount of coco, which would have to be decontaminated anyway.
all the best

Thanks for your response. Is coco at least cheaper than soil? Otherwise I don't really see the advantage
