Question about Hood in Tent

I'm new obviously or I wouldnt be asking such a stupid question, but my tent is 8'x 4'x 6.5'. I have a 1k hood that measures 42.5"x 28.5". I plan to grow roughly 10 plants in 5 gal pots.

Now if I run my hood horizontally it would be 42.5" inside of 48" not giving me much room to vent my hood.... Or would I be alright running it vertically and just build a reflector? Or option 3 take my hood back and get a smaller size, but if that's the case what is the aprox size I should be looking for?

You could align your hood horizontally but the other way ... long axis along long axis.

In such a space however, if you will stay with one light source ... I would recommend a light mover/rail. cn

Ok, so will my plants still get enough lighting if i put it vertically? Long term, what to do? And I figured I would have to invest in a light mover anyways.

Ok Sorry, I just read a lot more and noticed Vertically is a whole different way of growing. haha, So having said im a complete retard I apologize. So if I run it the long way the long way, will I be ok if I just run a reflector possibly?

With that hood you will get a 7' foot print. You would be better off getting 2 600w in there covering 5.5' each so you would have a overlap and giving alot more light into the canopy. You could go with 1000's but heat might be a issue.

Or if you don't want to spend the money for the hoods and setup get a light mover. And all is coverd.

any kind you would recommend? Also heat altually might be an under issue for me. Growing in my garage, lets just say 65F right now in Cali so it should be about perfect with my light on at night.

The only thing is, After this first grow, I'm thinking of going and getting a 400 setup and setting aside 2-3ft for clones and or a Mother setup. So thats the only reason I kinda want to keep the 1k around for the overall top flowering.I've heard its better. But I do love the canopy Size and the ability to put a 600 watt bulb in it, if I do decide to go that route.

With a 1K light, use a mover, Movers cover areas of a your plants that stationary lights dont = greater yield and quality.

Im doing the same thing kind of: 2 600w in 8ftx4ft tent in garage on the west coast with temps just like that, i also run my light cycle the same way.
Go to Lowes and buy some 2ftx4ft 1.5inch thick styrofoam. Then cut them to fit (not much is needed) the bottom of your tent then put your plants back in, this will lift you root zone off the warmth sucking concrete floor. It will give you some insolation for when it get colder. If your root zone is warm enough the foliage of your plant can with stand colder temps. ALSO KEEP YOUR BALLAST OFF THE FLOOR IT WILL F*** 'EM UP JUST LIKE IT WOULD A CAR BATERY.

I have read this in a few places, Do you recommend placing the ballast just on the wall outside the tent? Currently mine is sitting on the shelf still in the box. So do you like the duel 600 setup? I'm really debaiting about just taking the hit and getting two 600 setup's. However I think I will be fine if I run say a side mounted T-5 setup, I'm Sure I can magyver some shit to work for another grow setup in my tent.

Thanks again for your guy's help

Definately you're better w/ 2 hoods ... no matter the wattage. An enclosed hood is best, but it's useless unless it's properly ducted. Heat is always a major issue, unless you've prepared for it. So your first calculation/concern should be the final height of your plants. Things like movers are great unless your ceiling is only 6½ ft high.

I'm also in my garage with a 4x8. My journal below was from my first crop a year or two ago. I've learn a LOT since then :) I'm not doing dirt, so I can't help much there but I do know how to set up a tent!!!!

And waddya know Cali too ;)

Since you have the light I'd suggest getting the light mover. When you set up your clone/mom nursery, do you have to use some of your 4x8 footprint? Also if you go the whole clone/mom route you will probably want to have a dedicated veg area unless you "pulse grow" veg, then flower in one enclosure.
2x600 HPS is ideal for a 4x8 space. Doubly ideal would be 2x600 on a light rail, for much better penetration, illumination, yield density.

,edit> T5s are very interesting to me. I recommend the "LED without LEDs" thread for a discussion on how to boost T5 efficiency. I did early veg under a T5 fixture ... and liked it. cn

ok, So I will just take the hit on my hortilux bulb then, return my hood and ballast, now that I am going to a 2x600w Setup, what size hoods should I look into? And which bulbs would you recommend?

As to the veg/mother room. I will end up getting another tent setup and probably place it behind this one in the garage.

Ok, so I'm headed in to my Local grow shop, picking up 2 600's mesasuring 28x24hood, 24x24 glass. Running 2 Quantum 600's for ballasts. I think this will work out a lot better. Thank you guys for your help again!
