Question for Guerilla Growers

So I have a couple of plants to stick in a great spot. The soil there is very sandy so I'm opting to stick them in the ground with buckets. I really don't expect anyone to come across them but of course I want to be as inconspicuous as possible so I was thinking I would take the soil from that spot and stick it on top of the browner soil that's in the pot so it won't stick out so much. Is that a bad idea?

I think I read someone advising against that but they didn't specify why and I don't remember thinking that they were neccesarily an expert.

i just put a little debree or brush over the soil, do it so it can easily be removed when watering, once the plant fills out you wont be able to see the soil anyways.

Ya and when you plant, dig the hole deep enough so that the rim of the pot is below the ground level of the dirt, that way when you water it puddles round the plant and you don't have to stand there and wait for the soil to soak it up to pour some more!

I don't see a problem with throwing some of the soil on top, but brush is easier!

you probably want to be careful if the soil is sandy because sand can compresses so much it can cause the roots to have no oxygen

not tryin to agrue with ya Humbolt, just sayin, I got my girls in pretty sandy soil, and their doin great.....but I do see what your sayin!

Thanks so much for the tips, I'm actually putting in better soil inside the bucket than the stuff that's native to the area, so I think it should be fine.

One more question.

I'm in Florida and we get heavy rains this time of year sometimes once a day every day, but usually at least 4 or 5 rains a week. Will I have to water these guys at all if that's the case? Will they get TOO much water? I still want to water a little bit hopefully so I can add nutes and stuff.

well im here in florida with an outdoor grow. i used fish emulsion and 50/50 soil/native dirt (sand) i had potting soil on top then when i buried the bucket i put about an inch of sand on top and i dont have any problems i did that to hide it better i also used pine needles in the area and put the around but not too thick. i also had to put deodorant human hair and piss around the bucket every time i go out there so the animals dont eat it. because its a sandy mixture you want to water every three days after the last rain. thats what im doing and its working fine

Hey, that's a great tip about the urine/hair/and deodorant!

How do you apply it? Is the deodorant a spray and you just spray a circle around the plant? Same thing with the urine or do you actually douse the plant? (hope not)... And the human hair, do I just spread that around?

And are you doing the bucket in the ground method or are you just sticking the soil straight into the ground?

the bucket is in the ground. i found a break in the trees with good undergrowth. make sure you look up when your at your grow and see how much day light they are getting i took a stick of deodorant an old stick i had i decided to use a couple times before breaking it up and spreading it around the bucket. i was going to get a haircut but i shaved my head so i would have the hair. and i piss a circle around my bucket it gets harder to do as the plants get bigger. dont pee directly on the plants. animals will stay away if they smell human scent.

Hey thanks for the great tips, the not urinating on the plant was a dumb question on my part; I figured as much.

One last question. How do you know when you've given your plant enough water? I'm used to judging according to the run-off and obviously you can't do that with a buried bucket.

i bring a 20 oz water bottle. because your in florida and it rains basically everyday you only have to provide enough water till the next rain. usually i water the third day after the last rain and the 20 oz is enough because more than likely it will rain within a day or two of watering. depending on how much sand you have determine the amount of water to water with. because water drains through sand and doesnt retain moisture you might have to water every other day after your first watering. but it all depends on how much water is retained in the soil. you might water tonight and it could be dry tomorrow. you have to kind of judge it accordingly.
