It depends on how much soil its in. If one gallon of water is enough to completely saturate the soil to the point where a little bit of water comes out of the irrigation holes, then one gallon is enough. I had a plant in a 5 gallon bucket (before it was stolen) and one gallon was enough.

if its a 1 week old plant and 3 inches tall the answer would be 0, if its 6 months old and 15 feet tall then it will need 20 gallons. Your answer lies in between that.
