quick soil ratio question - please help

I am about to fill my pots and get the third grow underway.

I just want to know what you guys think the best ratio of components would be.

I'm gonna have soil, worm castings, perlite, and coco fiber. What would you recommend for the ratio of each?

Probably something like,

5 parts Soil
1 parts Worm Casting
1 parts Perlite
1 parts Coco

I’m not an expert but there are a number of different combinations you could do. It’s really hard to over do it on the Worm Casting though.

Just for the sake of argument, what would be wrong with equal parts of all 4 ingredients? I ask this as a fairely recent convert to "Mix-Your-Own Oganics" becuase this mix sounds somewhat like mine:

4-Way Mix
1 part (store bought) Topsoil.
1 part Compost.
1 part Perlite (or Vermiculite).
1 part "Steer Manure"*.
For each gallon of 4-Way Mix, add about 1 or 2 Tblspns. of Dolomite lime.

* The "1 part "Steer Manure" can be made up of any kind of "balanced" organic ingredients and/or "fertilizers", mixed with the other 3 ingredients (Topsoil, Compost and Perlite) to act as a "filler" so that the volume equals 25% of the overall mix. Whatever you use to make this 1 part "Steer Manure", the idea is to make sure that the potency is no "hotter" than "Plain old Composted Steer Manure".

I've been suggesting this mix to others because the ingredients are easy to find almost anywhere. But I'd like to know if it's really a good recipe - it seems to work OK.

I'd apprecieate some feedback from some "Organic Gurus". Like I said I'm a recent convert to mix-your-own because I got tired of spending the Big Bucks for Fox Farm (etc.).

i get a bag of FFOF for 18 bucks
and does awesome

Actually, I get all of that for about the same price as you. The difference is that you end up with one bag, I end up with four!

It ain't "Rocket Science" it's just economics!

Depends on what and how you are feeding them. Will you be feeding them more than water? if so what. I makes a difference. I use to mix my own but decided that I wanted to keep it simple and organic. I mix Promix and coco 50/50 and feed every 5 to 7 days. I am using raised beds. (keeping it simple) I feed 1/2 strength Pure blend soil, (soon to be OMRI approved) Organicare is OMRI approved.
