Ramblings of a Grumpy Old Dreamer

I like the new avatar. It has a few jaggies, but that is hard to avoid with transparency in the palette. Great looking grow.... On my last grow, the sugar leaf looked so damn good, I only cut off tips and left the rest to cover the calyxes. I couldn't bare to remove so much THC resin glands with the snip snip of Fiskars. :)

The "jaggies" are a product of using the herb :-)

I don't know what I am going to do with the Magic Bud trimming yet - so many trichomes and a couple of weeks or so to go yet.

I do know that I'll be drying it in a food dehydrator, sure beats hanging it up for days.

Are you going to write that up and share the technique? How dry will you get it in the dehydrator? All the way? :o

My feelings about drying/curing is that as long as the trichomes aren't damaged by heat or (god forbid) microwaves or steam, then quick(ish) drying is fine, or more than "fine" - preferable.

Slow drying by hanging has been done for ... well forever really, but as I don't have huge harvests I don't need to hang the buds to dry - they all fit in the dehydrator.

It's hard to say how long I need to dry them as it depends on humidity and the amount of buds, probably dry them to the "standard" dry but bendy stage.

I feel that curing begins when you finish drying, that is after all the burping and farting around.

For example, my last drying was for 24 hours on the machines lowest setting - 15 mins on / 15 mins off.
After the 24 hours the buds were put in a jar with a hygrometer which read about 75% humidity once the moisture had stabalised.
Then over the next 24 hours (or less) I dropped the humidity to 65% using sachets of silica gel.
Then it was seal and leave to cure.
The buds never lost their scent, never took on any "hay" smell and never had a chance to go mouldy.
I live in sub-tropical Australia, humidity is an unreliable factor so I don't air dry.

Sweating and burping your buds is a slow way to get the humidity down to the curing level - my method gets to the curing zone quicker but it is still very gentle on the buds ... and the buds are so very nice :-)

I thought Austraila was all dry an desert like.
Wild.
Where I live looks like the outback.........
Nah, we have everything from jungle to desert and snow and beaches - 3 or 4 different time zones.

Where I live looks like suburbia, at least the property sizes are decent so my grow room smell isn't in my neighbours face.

I haven't decided which Tangerine Dream will be used for my ScrOG but I am leaning towards the shorter one, she seems to have a more compact growth. Clones will be taken from both until I decide which to use.

I have decided that the taller of the TDs will be my next Mother plant, the top two branches are big enough to remove as clones leaving the grafting sites ready to be developed.

The first 2 grafts will be Red Dragon and L.S.D. and these will be attached to the top two grafting spots.

There are 2 more branches lower down that are not big enough to give up clones yet, one of these "graft sites" will be allowed to remain Tangerine Dream and the opposite site will carry a graft from the other Tangerine Dream (until I decide which pheno to keep)

Anyhow ... pikkies time

First is the Tangerine Dream before the clones were removed leaving the first 2 graft sites, and the second pikkie is after clone removal.

The small branches need to grow for a couple of days, I like them to start getting woody (or at least firm) so that the tape can be applied firmly to secure the wound closed.

... and I have some more babies - both the two Acapulco Gold seeds that I started have sent out roots and have been planted in tiny hempy pots, so in 5 or 6 weeks I will probably be making a fresh mother plant with 4 strains.

Oh Grumpy the last two pages i been reaal slow to catch up on....

I believe thats the first i seen of the 'inside' of you grow area....not that i snoop, its just an observation?

and with your avatar i have another microscope seperate to my jewler's loupe, its a 10 x 200, what did you use to take ths shot and how did you prepare your slide or viewing area and what part did you take your cut from? I have adapted my scope to have a light from above so that i can see three dimensionally but unfortunately its quite old and is certainly not digitilised as such with USB capabilities

Hey grumpy, just finished reading through the thread, was wondering how the penetration on the kessil lights is? Right now I'm using a 150w HPS and was going to move up to a 250 but this seems much more efficient and from your experience with them they're customer service sounds great. Do you think 2 lights would be sufficient for a 26x28 inch space, if not then how many would you suggest? And if I go 12/12 from seed would you recommend the purple or magenta lights? Lastly, how much heat do they put off? I would like to be able to reduce my electric bill as well as maybe my temps, though they haven't been a problem yet I'm not sure how they'll be over the summer.
