rdwc inline filter?

firing up the rdwc build tomorrow. Just crossed my mind, should i be running a coarse filter to prevent root bits from passing through pump and chiller? wont be running the chiller right away, but it will be added soon. If i do need a filter, any recommendations would be great. im running a 400gph active aqua as inline, so the filter in it isnt being used.

i wouldent, if it gets blocked you risk damaging all your expensive equipment

just keep your system clean and you should be ok, roots if kept in good condition will not loose bits into your system

ok sounds good. switched over to cultured solutions with uc roots a few days ago and everything is extremely clean now.

Fwiw your filter is upside down. raise up from floor and spin entire case 180 so screw top is facing down. You don't even have to take the lines off.

Yeah then you lose more head room.. but its not a bad idea if you got the space to raise the whole system like that. Then you can drain most the waste right out of the cap on the filter(being the lowest point, and pointing down the correct way instead), without turning valves or shutting down the main pump to clean it. It will empty most of the debri right out of the cap, right into a pan or a hose, etc. You can change the drainage cap out and screw a ball valve on instead if you wanted, for quicker action. If you frequently drained from the filter that way, it would hardly ever clog up.

I have my pump right on the floor because the output on a PondMaster is about the same height, but you could just bolster your pump up higher. Just place a pan under the clean out and your good to go. You almost never have to take the screen out unless in between runs for cleaning.
