Re-appraisal inspection?? WHATT??

WHOA! So I just got a letter in the mail from my city assessor's office saying that the town is reappraising all city properties to adjust property values or some bullshit. They have hired a contractor (private sector) to come in and assess all properties and compile reports, etc. Apparently, this person will perform "a complete interior and exterior inspection of the property." So basically, he's gonna come into my house and look in every room, every closet, measure everywhere and what not. Needless to say, I"M FREAKIN OUT!!! I got five beauties goin under a 400 w MH right now, just a personal stash thing, but still... So my questions are

1. how the hell is this 'inspection' legal? Don't we have any right to privacy? How can the town fuckin decide that some random guy can waltz into my house and look around, with no warrant and no nothin??

2. Anybody else ever had this happen?

3. how worried should i be that if he sees evidence of a grow the cops will magically find out about it soon after?

I really don't want to kill these now even though they're just in veg (some 2, some 4 weeks), so I'm thinking I'll just put some jade or other house plants under the light as decoys (it's for my seasonal affected disorder!) before he comes and hide the plants in cardboard boxes inside a big storage cabinet I have. No way he can snoop inside my storage, right? Fuck that!!

I feel like even with this plan, he's gonna see the closet with the light and the vent holes cut in the closet door, fans and shit, and he's not gonna buy the indoor garden excuse, and I'll be way paranoid the rest of the time. Any experience with this kind of situation or advice would be so much help. Thanks a lot for reading guys!

Do as you mentioned w/ the cardboard boxes.... or if possible, just slap them outside somewhere (weather permiting + not visible to other neighbors)... Or possibly throw them up in your attic... not sure if they'd insepct up there or not...

He shouldn't be there more than an hour or two (max)... Leave your stuff up in the closet, just put some other plants there... There's nothing illegal about growing plants in your house, minus marijuana of course...

Whatever you may choose, good luck to you... i wouldn't worry about it though, take the right steps to ensure it's not found and you'll be alright...

Make your home unavailable, if you're not home they won't break in. If they don't have a key, they won't come in. He can do the appraisal from "comps", they are properties just like yours. So if he goes in to every house on your block except yours, there's a 99.99% chance your property will have the same value also. Relax & don't be available! If he sees you in there, you're sleeping on the couch. If he catches you home, you're just leaving. Be calm, be casual, & he will go away! - former appraisal & home inspection coordinator

He will be in and out of your house in 5 minutes. They just are looking for conditions. Like holes in wall, piles of garbage, updated and remodled rooms. They are looking at value. Some dnt even come inside.

You don't have to allow them access.

Mikedigital is right - they will value your home with "like homes" in your area.

They did that in my area too, The only reason they do that is to jack up you house value, subsequently jacking up your house insurance. It's always about the ins companys, BS. Anyways, you could be gone that would be a good way to handle it. Or you could stay there and direct him where you can go or not.

don't let him in your house. make yourself unavailable, like someone here said.

i don't think he'll camp outside your house waiting to come in if you choose to not let him in.... he'll problably just guesstimate it....

i don't think a cop can show up and make you let him inside your house.... if you're 'unavailable' .... just lock yourself in the house and don't open the door...

Thanks so much for the help. I think I'll just stash the plants in storage boxes and set up some herbs in the grow closet. I actually would like to grow some tomatoes and basil anyway, so I could just have them in the back of the closet since they don't need as much light. If I do decide to let him in, I'll just say someone is sleeping in that room, that they work the night shift and can't be disturbed, and give him the measurements of the room.

My father did this for 20 yrs. They are assessing value for tax purposes. Most of the time
the ins can't get to the records or even need them and hire there own co for appraisal if needed.

the county or city can get a judge to force you or just jack up your taxes by doing
whats called a "blind" assessment.

It's total bullshit for real

You honestly think subbing in legal plants is going to fool anybody.. Do that and you'll never know who out there might have a really good hunch about your residence.. Once they have a hunch they'll almost certainly find probable cause..
But as far as hilarious excuses, say you're not willing to risk him bringing a pandemic like H1N1 into your house..:)
Just kidding, don't let them in.. Its really easy for them not to care..
