My question is: is there a way I can soften the sound of my PC fans? Maybe with some sort of muffler or something? Check out my thread for details on my box... its in the stealth/micro/cab grow section called: my first PC grow journal. Here's the start.

Maybe line the inside of your box with dyna mat or some other sound deadening material?

Can any one tell me what I need to wire up a PC fan to plug into an outlet? I still have the wires and all connected to the fan, even the little USB like plug they had plugged into the circuit on the PC

It was a Dell

I use sticky weather stripping to quiet the ones I sit on the ground, mostly is a vibration noise, the next thing is use a shroud, it will direct the sound and aim it low...it has helped me...

This is what you do..
Cut wires from the usb and fan.
Find what the fans volts are (most are 12v)
Look around your house for something like a battery charger.
You need the charger to have an "output" or 12v, do not go more volts than your fan. But you can use less volts. The only problem is, less air flow comes with less volts.

If your charger and fan have different amount of amps, it is ok!

Whats wrong If i find something with more than 12v? BOOM? lol

I found 12v, .5amps...

My fan has 1.3 amps is tht ok?

Its also an AC adapter, but the fan says DC, should i find a DC?

My fan has four wires, black white red and blue.

Would I be correct in assuming the black and white are -+

Black & Red.
that charger or w/e will be fine.

if volts on your charger are more than the fan, the fan will burn out

only way to quiet them down is to run higher cfm fans at lower voltage if its still not enough airflow run 2 at low voltage... there loud when you crank them up....

you will discover that stealth isint really all that stealth. 10 23watt cfls make more heat in my box then a remote ballast 150watt hps. and even pc fans make lots of noise

On thing that I haven't seen mentioned yet that you could try is to lube your fans. I don't know if your fans are new or used, but particularly after your fans have been running for a while, they get noisier. You can gently peel off the sticker on the inflow side of your fans and apply a single drop of light oil to the spindle underneath. Reseat the sticker back down to seal it up and enjoy all of your extra SHHHHHH.
