Reason to be concerned??? Weird color pattern on leaves (late veg)

Hey peeps.
STATS:
Zkittles x Tangie run going.
5 gallon pots
Mother Earth coco + 20-30% perlite.
Hand watering 18-25oz per (3-4x/day)
Gen-hydro trio @ feed chart recommendation
Temps 68(off), 77-79(on)
Humidity 60-65%
5.7-5.8 Ph
Ppm in=8-900; out=350-450

Been uneventful except a flush 2 weeks ago due to slight build up…. they got real pissy and showed deficiencies (cal mostly) and turned a bit light green; BUT as I worked PPM in back up from 300-800 they responded well.

I noticed weird coloring patterns on the leaves last week (but didn’t take them seriously as these have thrown random variegated leaves throughout the run). Also, I’m seeing some mild burn spots.
Two days ago I did up cal-mag to 3.5-4ml per gallon as I believed I saw a cal def on new growth and mag def on lower growth.

I do have a tendency to overwater when using a soil media FWIW; but not sure that’s the problem with coco being so forgiving.

My suspicion is I may be pushing em to hard and just need to go back to 5-600ppm with strong cal mag.

I attached some pics though, any thoughts?

Try epsom salt instead of increasing calmag
Hey. Can you provide more context around this?

otherwise, I’d assume it’s to isolate a single source of concentrated mag?

I did test runoff PH this am and it was up in the mid 7 range, surprisingly. Did a heavy watering with light feed at 5.4ph, got runoff of 6.8-6.9.

Perhaps Mag is locked out by 7+ PH at the roots?

Thanks for the reply.

I’m a space cadet… up close do I see some leaf miner trails? Something is gobbling up your chloroplasts
Gonna grab a bottle of neem oil today and give them a good spray and soil rinse. After I sort out this complication I’ll be flipping to flower anyway - so timing is good.

I found a few ants (2-3) on one of the very back branches…. and they’ve been bad here this summer.

Maybe ants caused some of the damage we are
to the leaves? Idk.

***UPDATE***
I tested runoff PH and it was up in the 7.4-7.6 range. Adjusted PH in to 5.4 and did a heavy watering (light feed) and got 6.8-6.8 ph out. Maybe mag was locked out due to 7+ ph at the roots….. keep y’all posted.

Looks like calcium deficiency more than magnesium. Magnesium is less spotty like that.

Word. I felt I saw some calcium def that was identical to earlier cal def from a lockout early in the grow.

I have done the following….
- increase cal mag 1.5 ml per gallon
- raised lights a few inches (to rule out light stress)
- pulled back 30% on the PPMin
- reduced ph to optimize overall micro/macro nutrient update

Would you offer any other advice?

On second look I do think its magnesium just early stage, you can see lower leaves have the dead space between the veins of the leaf. Increase feed and add 1 gram of unscented epsom salts per gallon of water once a week.

This advice has been pretty in line with my suspicions. Two quick things I’d like to get clarity on, please.

1. By “increase feed” do you mean raise nutrients back where they were OR to further increase Cal-mag when I mix fertigation solution?
2. Epsom - is this to be combined with my regular fertigation solution OR is the epsom watering to be done on its own?

thanks again.

My advice would be switch to Maxi line from General Hydroponics and just feed 1 teaspoon per gallon in bloom and 1/2 teaspoon in gallon in veg. Keep pH at 6.0 and you will never need calmag or additives even when running RO Water. You will just need pH UP of some kind. I use their Armor Si as pH UP and to add silica to the mix.

5 ml/gal Armor Si (If you have high enough pH you can skip the armor si, its a very high pH silica supplement, stronger than GH pH UP itself.)
1/2 teaspoon per gallon MaxiGro (IN VEG)
1 teaspoon per gallon MaxiBloom (IN BLOOM)

Also Maxi is really easy you basically go off how green the plants are, oh plants are light green feed more, oh plants are dark green feed a scoop less..

Some use MaxiBloom in bloom and veg but I wouldn't do that personally. The bud in the light is helping support the plant. I also learned the worst thing that happens to my current genetics is they will get a little bleached on just that top.

I appreciate the thoughtful reply. At this time, I will aim to finish this run with general hydro; as I see value in seeing this thru from a learning opportunity vantage point and just maintaining consistently.
But with this line seeming so user friendly, you’ve given me something to consider.
Very pretty lady there, super chunky flowers. Great work friend.

Maxi is General Hydro, definitely finish up what you have but give the maxi a try, you can get the 2.2 lb bags for pretty cheap then if you like it you save a lot of money buying the 16 or 50 lb containers.

if it’s a mag deficiency, if you do a foliar spray with epsom, you should see improvements in a day or two (green leaves)

Magnesium gets locked out at lower ph not higher so I don’t think it was a result of ph being too high
I must have been looking at an old soil ph v nutrient absorption chart.

So maybe the best look is to run my Ph closer to 6.1-6.2 and not worry so much about the high Ph out?
Will likely try a foliar feed of Epsom.
