I gotta summon all my cannajedi skills today... last night when I watered, I went to calibrate the pH since it's been a while and i've only calibrated to 7 lately... the seedlings are a lot pickier on the pH since there's no lime... i'm gonna see if you can lime baby soil though.... anyway I was wondering why my 7 kept reading at 4?!?! Come to find out eventually it's because the glass bulb surrounding the electrode on the pH pen had broken... my pH pen is fucked! GRRRRRR. So last night was no problem because I know about what the pH will come down to on my flower mix because it's the same every time... and the soil is limed if it's a little off... but I gotta water seedlings today with no pH pen and a couple of the space dawgs have some minor first leaf damage most likely due to pH being off already... so I'm gonna have to see if I can zen my way through this.

CannaJedi... I like that...

Yeah it's well water with the drought here they're probably just happy with water.. it's all mineral content... the plants like the water just fine but I can't water without some pH adjusting even in SS. And for some reason here the RO water you get from those machines that dispense to 5 gallon jugs you can never tell what the pH is gonna be... i've had it come out in the 4s as often as the 6s...

I do dream of getting a good RO machine and having nice pHed water that can go straight into super soil.. would make watering much easier :) But with < 1 year living here I just don't see putting one in even if I can afford it... i'd rather save the $$ to put into whereever I end up moving.

5 of the new sprouts above dirt of different strains...

just planted 4 dairy queen, 4 ace of spades, 5 void

Looks like I'm going to be germing more tonight... i did some looking at my timeline and I don't have enough time to start a perpetual run... in fact I barely have enough time to get plants vegged starting now to get them done flowering before i have to minimize the grow again... i should just be able to get everything harvested and jarred before I gotta go out of town. may have to move my trip to december after all... anyway, gonna need 24 girls ASAP that means planting lots of beans...at least another pack.

just put 6 more aces and my last 3 mickey kush in water

so the lineup for next run will be:

10 ace of spades
10 mickey kush
9 dr who (10 if the nongermer makes a miraculous appearance)
5 void
4 dairy queen
6 space dawg
4 JC2
4 Qush

I hope they show sex quick! the space dawgs are already starting to get rootbound and need transplanting... nice strong roots circling the bottom of the cups. I think I need to find some nice thin pots to plant all these babies into the 1.5s will be too big... i'm probably gonna need more light too -- though i'll have 3 240w veg LEDs and a 200w cfl... so it'll be close.

I may have overdone it. I kinda miscounted how many I already had going... oops

I would lov to give supersoil a go, but after having dealt with root aphids and mites in the past, I am very hesitant to go with soil. I hear lots of horror stories about Roots soils coming with thrips and RA's and such and I am just, "no way". I am sticking with hydro until I know for sure I can get clean soil.

What can I say... I smoke weed, I am paranoid!

I'm a supersoil fiend as well, just mixed up a new batch last week. My back has just now recovered...

I've used Roots Organic, Happy Frog and Foxfarm as base soils. The Roots is *much* lighter (more perlite mainly) than the other two, which makes me happy for a supersoil base, but I don't like it as my base soil for potting (it dries out too fast). I've never had any bugs show up from any of them -- I believe the Roots problem was traced to a single facility, and fixed, several years ago.

Anything but mites is irrelevant and pretty easy to deal with... thrips and aphids are easily wiped out by lady bugs... i've had aphids before (not from roots). If you're paranoid about bugs you can either do like subcool (pretreat soil with an organic bug killer like spinocid (sp)) or bake the soil to kill anything in it. I don't do any of that shit... i've never had spider mites, but they are definitely in my back yard -- they took down a pepper plant we had there. the only thing i'm really worried about is mites because usually by the time you find out about them, it's bad no matter what -- at the BEST a big pain in the ass. I've never heard that hydro prevents you from getting mites though I'm pretty sure you can get mites on your plants in hydro through transmission... probably does make it harder without the soil tho.

I do a 1/4 of a batch at a time... 2 bags of super soil and 1/4 the recipe... about $50 for the soil tho if you got a good one locally cheaper you can always go with that... $5-10 for castings, the rest you pretty much have to get in packages that can be used for multiple runs of super soil or your own custom mix, or your outdoor plants, so it's not like it's gonna go to waste even if you don't keep using super soil.... probably around $40-50 that'll get you through several batches of super soil... So yeah probably gonna cost you over $100 for a small batch to do it the way I am... this whole run was from 4 bags of roots probably around $150ish in actual ingredients... which is definitely not cheap, but for me I probably yield a lot more in super soil than the other ways I've tried so it's a small amount compared to what I get back from it -- really one better yielding plant pays for the whole thing if I get an ounce extra you know what I mean?

How was I not subscribed to this before? Epic LEDness.
Unfortunately moving further away from LED as I go due to not wanting to spend the $$ to invest in bigger LEDs... since my focus is trying to save to move I can't really justify it at least until i'm set up somewhere else :) i'm still not so much in love with HPS as with the big buds those little 240s just can't deliver on comparatively :)

I do prefer roots for the same reason as you it's a lighter mix more in between soilless and soil than one or the other.... you could really almost say it's soilless with the benefits of soil -- there's not much actual soil in there compared to other mixes. I tried happy frog the mix was way too heavy for me I ended up overwatering because I'm used to watering with roots... you almost can't overwater with roots it's very forgiving in that sense, especially if you combine it with airpots :) Roots is the best soil I've used so far, tho I'm sure tga's version will blow it away if I ever get ahold of some... not gonna say you're guaranteed no bugs with roots (tho gnats is the worst i've had, and that's as much on me as the soil -- they need a moist place to live :) i can't say for sure i even ever got gnats from roots since i tend to use more than one thing), but as far as quality for growing taking that out of the equation it's up there (unless you're looking for a soil that retains more water and willing to take the risks associated with that... still you can add stuff for water retention for example i add extra coco coir)

In case you haven't noticed a lot of my grow is tailored to making it easier for me not to fuck things up ;)

water is the next end of that equation...

Tonight's day 35 so I will probably be taking a vid here shortly since i moved my light schedule to days I don't have to wait til 8:30 to take the vid :) we'll see how big those ace and finishing timewreck buds have gotten...

Glad I'm not an outdoor grower... the day shift it's definitely a bit warmer in there than before late afternoon.

Video is almost done saving, then will be uploading... give it 30-45 min

Root Aphids will fuck your day up. Honestly I can deal with and eradicate pretty much any pest. I am not organic and have no issues laying down the big chemical smite hammer on them. The thing is that I don't want to waste even one day on pests if I don't have to. Hydro doesn't prevent anything, it's that not having to bring in new soil every few months means one less vector. And running a continuous sys means a break in my timing if any bugs show up in flower since I only use the big hammer in my veg rooms. (Thankfully the hammers have not been needed in a long time)

So I am going to try SS before the year is over. That's my goal. I have room for another room, and would like to give it a go. I have too much invested in my current sys to change completely though.
