Res Change Time!

OK guys thanks so mucg for helping me get everything up and running. Its time for a res change and im a little nervous. Some simple questions and simple answers. My res has a green tinge to it and smells a lil stinky not bad though, but looks like maybe some algea? i put a lid on the res so hopefully that helps.

1. Do you empty out 100% of the water? Im using my flood pump which leaves a litttle water in the bottom. im putting 15 new gallons in does that bottom inch really matter?

2. Do you scrub anything with any sort of chemicals?

3. is the green tinge im seeing in my water normal? what is it how do i prevent it.

4. is there anything i can use so i can do fewer res changes? (currrently using flying skull z7)

5. any tips or aha moments to make my life easier will help thanks!!!

get a second tub that's the same as the first and have that cleaned,scrubbed and sterilized so you can just swap it out.

Too many tubes and dosers running in and out to make that feasable. I do have a secondary tank and just plan on siphoning in.

The green tinge could very well be from nutes. Best way to tell for me anyway is by smell, if it starts to smell then I sterilized with light bleach water.

Only use Ona bleach on your rezs and tables. Normal bleach corrodes the plastic, and it's not healthy for plants if u do not get it all out. Ona bleach dissipates after 6 hours and because of this it is safe for plant if some is left in the Rez on accident.
The company was just sued by Clorox for labeling rights so they cannot produce any at this time but had a large stock pilled up. Get it while u can. It's used at 2.5 ml per gal, so it last along time for those who will have sticker shock at the price.

Bleach does not "corrode" plastic, and as long as it is an accepted food grade plastic, bleach will have no discernible effects on it. Chlorine is a needed micro nutrient for plants, and when used in normal solution of 1:10 (bleach:water) for cleaning/disinfecting, then rinsed, is harmless to plants or people. Chlorine will off gas natural in 12hrs or so, and about 6hrs if aerated. There are people on this site using household bleach, I believe at 1ml/gal, in their active res for pathogen control without and negligible effects on plants.

Believe whatever you like. I'm going with what chemistry tells me, not some forum.

I seriously think I spend more time cleaning than anything else. Yes that means breaking everything down, soaking pumps in bleach dish soap water, cleaning tubing etc. It really sucks when things go bad because you where too lazy to keep things clean and you still have to pay the electric bill. I have a dedicated mop+bucket I use to get into the 55g drums. Pump out your old res drag it close to the shower rinse it out, pour in some household bleach, add some dish soap and fill it 1/4 or even an 1/8th full and scrub. Rinse it out really well, then carry on. get used to cleaning it saves a ton of headaches.

I just had reconstructive hand surgery so this grow I'm gonna have to be a lil lazy but my res temp is at 58 so with that and z7 hope I can stay away from slime... Thanks!

So i was going to post a macro/micro nute list to refute you and I realize I can find lists that say both chlorine and chloride, which is why I was thinking that way..I need to go figure out whats the deal..

Plants utilize nutrients in ionic form. When chlorine picks up an electron it forms chloride, which is an anion (negatively charged ion).

Just to prove my point further. At a 1:10 bleach:water ratio, you will use almost 4 gallon of standard bleach to sterilize a Rez properly. At $3 a gallon, that's $12 per 40 gallon Rez. Ona bleach takes 100ml of A and B to do the same Rez At $30 qgallon each. 3960/30 is .0076 a ml. It cost 75 cent per bottle, so a total of $1.50 to sterilize a 40 gallon with Ona bleach.

Laugh out loud all you want while your throwing your money down the drain. ;)

I agree. Regular bleach is used in natural disasters and by survivalist to sterilize DRINKING water. It's not going to hurt a plant and some people use bleach every time as part of bacterial maintenance in hydro reservoirs. It's mixed with the new nutes during rez changes. If someone wants to spend the money on a product they prefer that's great and I support them but I don't think knocking a perfectly viable cheap solution is fair.
