OK, but unemployment is very different from welfare/disability in that it is theoretically temporary. So let's say all these unemployed people are out there blowing their unemployment check on pot, meth, and coke in addition to their opiate prescription. The taxpayer forks out $1,200 - that's per test - and the unemployed person tests hot. Does the political will exist to kick them off unemployment rolls? I don't think so. More likely, they would be forced to participate in a treatment program, while still picking up a check. Now you are really blowing some money on such persons. Far cheaper to let them get doped up out of their minds on the public dole and simply limit the time people can stay on unemployment benefits.

As for welfare, there is a cottage industry dedicated to helping these people shift over to federal disability payments as that is permanent. The SSI program quite clearly states that they will not even investigate any claims that a given recipient is not truly disabled. If the feds don't give a damn whether the recipient is actually disabled, they couldn't care less if the recipient is taking drugs beyond their existing prescription.

they've tried this in florida and elsewhere, you end up spending more money on the drug tests than you save by kicking a scant 1-2% off the system.

but hey, you're entitled to your idiocy, no matter how backwards, counterproductive, and violative of the constitution it may be.
 
God forbid we try to help the addicts instead of putting them on the streets. I mean, it's not like they're people too or anything.

Decades ago I worked for years in a fed jobs program called CETA (Comprehensive Employment and Training Act). It was a federally funded (us taxpayers) program for adults and high school students. We took apps but never checked for the accuracy regarding the "poverty guideline" requirements. We knew many were lieing, didn't meet the requirements legitimately but were powerless to do anything about it. Federal (labor) funds that was not spent come the first part of the 4th quarter was not good. We were instructed to spend it all or the Dept. of Labor would reduce next year's budget allocation....so we did. That's just the tip of the iceberg of gov. waste and fraud. The state Human Resources departments (welfare) are no better. State commissioner wants to come off as a good guy so what does he do? Gives all state employees an paid extra holiday off. Friend who's in the welfare system as a computer trainer bragged about it. I was furious that they have this much freedom to piss off MY money.

And when some lieing son-bitch like Obama says he's decreasing such and such to save the taxpayers money, don't believe it. We used to play that game, "we're spending 6% less this year, hooray!" Right, after you got an 8% increase from the get-go.

It's all a game......played on the backs of hard working Americans.

Addicts need to want help, otherwise you're wasting time.

My opinion?

In Ireland for example we have roughly €250 mill a year in costs from addiction related crime, yet if the Govt purchased the drugs and gave them to the addicts via a doctor, etc it'd cost roughly €60 mill and obviously sharing needles, impure drugs etc are no longer an issue.

However this would require a paradigm shift from it being treated as a criminal matter to a public health matter.

To be honest I suppose I can't see the correct solution from my centrist position for the times we live in now without the aforementioned shift, but I can understand why the taxpayer doesn't want to support junkies ideologically but I'd still approach it from a public health angle.

"They"?

Both retarded parties had the ability to stop the spending on the "wars" waged in A-stan and Iraq.

Both parties continued to support that bullshit.

Both parties are complicit in wasting lives, resources, and the trust of the American people, if not the world.

The party system works for themselves, and no one else.

They need to be abolished, and new represents need to be elected based on ability and merit, and not on any convenient bullshit "party" platform.

In this country, they're willing to spend more money to makes their lives hell; without taking into account that it's a brutal cycle to do that. Maybe one day we'll get to the point where making attempts to help makes things better is not frowned upon.
